My daughter is ~16 months old, and before long, she will be turning 2. That means no more 3-for-1 flights! Currently, I get 3-for-1 flights thanks to the Southwest Companion Pass (2-for-1 flights) plus my daughter still being a lap child.
But that perk will end in September when my daughter turns 2. So I’m planning ahead and starting my credit card strategy now so that I can earn a lot more points for her flights. My partner and I fly on Southwest Airlines the most because of the best airline deal ever, the Southwest Companion Pass!
What Is the Southwest Companion Pass?
Because of the Southwest Companion Pass, we can add a designated companion to any Southwest Airlines flight paid with cash or with points. Usually the taxes and fees run around ~$11 to add the companion. This is why I love Southwest Airlines so much—because it’s just so cheap to travel!
Getting the companion pass again for 2019 and 2020 will help get more travel with the same number of points!
My Credit Card Strategy to Get Cheap Flights on Southwest for My Daughter
Because we like to fly on Southwest, my strategy is to increase my supply of Chase Ultimate Rewards points and Southwest points. I recently applied for the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card and I’ll be applying for another Chase Southwest credit card so that I can get the Southwest Companion Pass again for 2019 and 2020. For the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card, I can earn up to 60,000 Southwest points after tiered spending requirements.
For the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card, I’ll earn another 60,000 Southwest points after spending $3,000 within the first 3 months. Both credit cards combined will earn me up to 120,000 Southwest points! I doubt I’ll be able to meet the full spending required on the Southwest Priority to get the full 60,000 bonus, so I’ll be looking into other ways to earn points for the Southwest Companion Pass.
Credit Card Makeover For Friends & Family Will Help Earn LOTS More Points!
In addition to applying for these credit cards, I’m encouraging my family to get credit card makeovers. My mom has really good credit but only had store-issued credit cards to places like Home Depot and JC Penney’s. So, she recently got approved for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®.
