This Christmas I’m working to give my family the gift of the Southwest Companion Pass.  Research shows that happiness received from getting material possessions doesn’t last.  Having experiences like travel is what makes people happier — and that happiness lasts with the memories that are made with family and friends.

The Southwest Companion Pass is my favorite airline deal because I save so much money.  In 2018 alone, my partner and I saved ~$8,500 in combined flight costs!  Here’s everything you need to know about earning the Southwest Companion Pass for your family!  This is an especially great time of year to earn it because of the generous bonus sign-up bonuses on the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card and the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card.

Give the Gift of Travel With  Southwest Airlines’ Southwest Companion Pass!

What Is the Southwest Companion Pass?

Because I have a travel partner I regularly fly with, having the Southwest Companion Pass is very valuable to me.  With the Southwest Companion Pass, I can add a designated travel partner to ANY Southwest flight paid for with cash OR with points!  All I have to do is pay the extra taxes and fees, which is usually around ~$11.20 per person.

This means that all my flights on Southwest are essentially 50% off because I can add my partner without using any extra Southwest points!

I’m Giving My Family the Gift of Travel

I want to give my family the gift of travel so that we can make more memories with family and friends.  My Southwest Companion Pass is expiring at the end of this year in December 2018, so I’m applying for credit cards that will get me the Companion Pass again for 2019 AND 2020.  That’s right—the Southwest Companion Pass is valid for the calendar year you receive it, AND the year after!  So I’m planning on applying for the credit cards and meeting the minimum spend in January 2019.

Now is the best time to apply for the Chase Southwest Airlines credit cards because you can earn up to 60,000 Southwest points for all 4 credit cards when you meet tiered minimum spending requirements!  Have you had the Southwest Companion Pass?  Share your experience in the comments below!

Only the buisness card earns 60000 eith min.3000 spend .The other cards earn 40000 only and require you yo spend another 12000 on the card to qualify for companion pass. That means you have to spend ATLEAST 16000 on SW cards to get a passenger ticket free!!!!!How can that be a “Deal”?or am I missing something?

Southwest cards are issued by Chase….how are you getting around the 5/24 rule?

Author

I fall within the 5/24 rule.

I’m trying for the first time to get the companion pass too. I signed up for the SW business card with a 60,000 point bonus ($3,000 spend) and then the SW Plus at the airport (or on plane) for 50,000 point bonus ($2,000 spend). A little more in spend requirement but my bonuses will completely cover the 110,000 points needed for pass. Wish me luck on getting the timing down.

I think the airport application is the way to go.

Thanks for the tip! Make sure you hit the spending early next year (but before the minimum spending period is over).
