Chase just announced 3 new Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards credit card offers.  You can earn 30,000 Southwest points AND the Southwest Companion Pass, which will be good through December 31, 2019.  You’ll have to spend $4,000 in the first 3 months.  You can get the Companion Pass, which is the best deal in travel, for signing up and meeting the minimum spending requirement for just 1 credit card.

With the Southwest Companion Pass, earning 30,000 Southwest points is like getting 60,000 Southwest points.  That’s because you can add a designated travel companion to your ticket without using any additional points!  All you have to do is pay the taxes and fees, which is usually ~$11 per person on domestic flights.  And you can add your companion to flights paid for with points OR to flights paid with cash!

I’ve had the Southwest Companion Pass for ~6 years, and LOVE IT!  I’ve saved a lot of points by being able to add my companion for free.  Last year, we went to San Diego, Costa Rica, Washington, DC, and other cities with the Southwest Companion Pass.  And Southwest Airlines will be flying to Hawaii any moment now!

There Are 3 New Chase Southwest Airlines Credit Card Offers That Include the Southwest Companion Pass!

Who Are the New Chase Southwest Airlines Credit Card Offers Good For?

  • People with who travel with the same partner
  • People who live near an airport with Southwest availability & frequently travel to other Southwest destinations
  • People who can’t or don’t want to get 2 credit cards, but still want the Southwest Companion Pass.  Previously, one of the easiest ways to get the Companion Pass was to apply for 1 business credit card and 1 personal credit card
  • Families of 4+ who want to get 2 Southwest Companion Passes.  Each spouse could add 1 child as their companion
  • People who can’t or don’t want to get business credit cards

What I’m Doing

I already started (and nearly finished!) the process to get the Southwest Companion Pass the traditional way — by signing up for 2 credit cards.  I like that I will have close to 2 years with the Southwest Companion Pass, and that I’ll be getting 120,000 Southwest points after I finish all of the minimum spending required.  Those points are worth 240,000 Southwest points because I get to add my companion for nearly free (I just have to pay taxes and fees).

The new Chase Southwest Airlines personal credit card offers include the Companion Pass until December 31, 2019, and only include 30,000 Southwest points.

You can still get the:

Even if I hadn’t already started the process of getting my Southwest Companion Pass, I’d probably still get my Companion Pass with 2 credit cards.  That’s because I’m getting almost 2 years of adding my companion for nearly free (rather than just 1 year), and because I’ll be earning a total of 120,000 Southwest points (instead of 30,000).

Southwest Airlines Is My Favorite Airline.  That’s Because Southwest Airlines:

  • doesn’t charge cancellation or change fees
  • includes 2 free checked bags per ticket
  • has the best frequent traveler program (Rapid Rewards) in my opinion because points are easy to collect and easy to redeem
  • is part of the Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partner network.  I can transfer my Chase points to Southwest for free!
  • has the Southwest Companion Pass, which is the best deal in travel

I read above “Even if I hadn’t already started the process………I’ll be earning a total of 120,000 Southwest points.”

Why 120.000? I thought it was 110.000 points to qualify for the companion pass?

With the Business and a personal card, the bonus was 100.000 points. it is now only 90.000 points.

Is the bonus for personal cards going to go back to 40.000 after February 11, 2019?

I’d get this offer if it came for a business card.

Then: I’ve had the Southwest Companion Pass for ~6 years, and LOVE IT! In order to have the card for 6 years, do you apply for multiple cards (personal and business) for several years? I thought you couldn’t do that. I’m new at this points hobby!

The last time I had the credit cards was a few years ago. Here’s everything you need to know about the Companion Pass! https://millionmilesecrets.com/guides/southwest-companion-pass/

In November I got the SW Business card with 60K points. I will get the spending requirement completed in January. I was planning on getting the SW plus or premier card for 40K points. With these two cards I would have around 105K points toward my companion pass. With the new SW offer I would only get 30K pts. So I would have to get another 10K spending to reach the 2 year companion pass. Do you think after the February 11 deadline they will go back to the previous offer?

Author

I’m not sure what the offers will look like in February.

I’m in the same boat! I’m hoping they will go back to the previous offer as well.

kristen’s question below and keith’s response seem to indicate that the 2nd 2yr CP will indeed be mine if i cross the 110k limit. but will i also get that 1st 1yr CP (ie a separate one) via one of the new credit cards. (it seems unlikely, but some clarification would be much appreciated!)

i’m in the same boat, too. so question #1 is if you guys have any information on whether they will go back to their previous offers like wayne & sally have asked.
question #2 is this. if i get this 30k offer, finish the spend for this card, i’ll get the 1yr companion pass. if i then proceed to spend an additional 20k (so original biz card 60k + 30k + 20k = 110k), will i get a 2nd 2yr companion pass?

much thanks!

We don’t have information on what offers will be presented in February-March, but will post information as soon as we learn about it!

thanks, emily! but what about my other question? ie if i have 60k and i get the 30k card which comes with a 1yr CP, if i then cross the 110k total, will i get an additional 2yr CP. or possibly will i be precluded from getting a 2yr CP, which would be worse.

thanks!

This only applies if i don’t currently have the old chase southwest credit card, right? I still have both the premier and the plus.

Author

That’s right. If you currently have the Premier and Plus then you can’t get the bonus for new cards.
