New Daily Getaways travel deals start next week! For 5 weeks, the US Travel Association partners with hotels, airlines, and other providers to offer deals on travel. Some of them are worth buying!
On April 4, 2016, at 1:00 pm Eastern Time, you can purchase Choice Privileges points at a discount. Two of the packages are enough for 3 nights (or more) at Comfort Inn hotels, like the Comfort Inn St Louis – Westport! And with this deal, you save well over double the paid room rate at this hotel and many others.
I’ll explain how this offer works. And if you should consider it!
What’s the Deal?
Daily Getaways is a promotion offered each year by the US Travel Association. For 5 weeks, they’ll have a different daily deal with discounts on travel like hotel stays, theme park admission, and vacation packages.
All of the deals are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. So once they’re gone, that’s it. In the past, they’ve sold out within a matter of minutes – so set a calendar reminder if you’re interested!
To kick it off this year, the 1st deal will be for Choice Privileges points. For example, you can buy 40,000 Choice Privileges points for $160. That’s enough for 3 nights at some Choice hotels (or more, depending on how you redeem the points)!
You can buy:
- 40,000 Choice Privileges points for $160 (0.4 cents per point)
- 36,000 Choice Privileges points for $155 (0.43 cents per point)
- 32,000 Choice Privileges points for $132 (0.41 cents per point)
- 20,000 Choice Privileges points for $90 (0.45 cents per point)
The deals begin on April 4, 2016, at 1:00 pm Eastern Time. There are ~2,000 packages available this year across all the packages available that day.
As you can see, the best deals are for the 40,000 and 32,000 Choice Privileges packages.
For example, when you buy the Comfort Inn deal you’ll get 36,000 Choice Privilege points and pay 0.43 cents for each point. But you’ll do better by purchasing the Comfort Suites or Cambria Suites deal instead. Because you pay 0.4 to 0.41 cents for each point.
You can actually redeem the points you buy from these packages at any Choice hotel, including Ascend Collection, Cambria Suites, Clarion, Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, EconoLodge, MainStay Suites, Quality Inn, Rodeway Inn, Sleep Inn, and Suburban brand hotels.
It all depends on how many points you need, and how much you want to spend. Whichever package you choose, you’ll see the points in your account within 10 business days.
You can redeem them as long as you have a Choice Privileges account. Click here to join if you don’t already have one (it’s free)!
This year, the limit is 2 of these packages per loyalty account number. And no more than 8 packages across all the Choice hotel offers.
Is It Worth It?
Link: Choice Hotels
Choice hotels like Comfort Inn often have large rooms, swimming pools, in-room refrigerators and microwaves, and free breakfast (no elite status needed!). They’re not especially fancy, but many of them are family-friendly.
And, they’re a great option for folks who travel to smaller cities and towns. In those areas, you won’t always find chains like Hyatt, Club Carlson, Marriott, or Starwood. But you can almost always find a Comfort Inn (or other Choice brand) hotel.
Depending on how you redeem your Choice Privileges points, you can get a hotel stay worth much more than the cost of the Daily Getaways packages.
For example, I found 3 nights in June 2016 at the Comfort Inn St Louis – Westport for ~$386. Or, you can redeem 36,000 Choice Privileges points for the exact same dates.
With the Daily Getaways Comfort Inn deal, that’s like paying $155 for the stay. You’re effectively paying ~$52 per night instead of ~$129 per night! That’s a fantastic deal!
There are many ways to make the most of it. My friend took advantage of this deal when it was offered last year. She wound up paying about half-price for a room she needed while traveling for work.
Earn Southwest Points for the Companion Pass
The Southwest Companion Pass allows a friend or partner to fly with you on any paid or award ticket for only the cost of taxes and fees. It’s basically 2 tickets for the price of one!
For example, if you buy 36,000 Choice Privileges points for $155, you could transfer them all to Southwest and get 10,800 Southwest points.
That means you’re essentially buying 10,800 Southwest points for ~1.4 cents per point, which is about what they’re worth towards paid Southwest flights. So that’s NOT a great deal…unless you’re working toward the Companion Pass.
If You Currently Have the Southwest Companion Pass
But if you already have the Southwest Companion Pass, you might consider buying Choice points using this deal and transferring them to Southwest. Because a friend or family member flies with you for almost free on paid and award tickets, your Southwest points are worth nearly double.
Normally, Southwest sells points for ~3 cents per point, so this could be a good deal for some!
Are There Drawbacks?
Sometimes! I wouldn’t usually use Choice Hotel points for stays at lower-category hotels. That’s because you can normally get paid nights cheaply.
That said, Choice hotels don’t have blackout dates. If there’s a room available, you can book with with your points. So you’re better off saving your points for more expensive stays. Just make sure you have some activity in your Choice Privileges loyalty account every 18 months, or your points will expire.
And again, you can use the points for any Choice hotel, even in bigger cities where rooms cost more points per night. As always, run the numbers before you book. Depending on how you like to travel, this offer can save you a lot of money!
Consider Using These Points in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden
For example, a great use of Choice Hotel points is for expensive hotels in Europe, especially Scandinavia. You can often find moderately priced award nights that would otherwise cost hundreds of dollars.
Daily Getaways deals can be a great way to get Big Travel with Small Money for hotel stays and other travel. On April 4, 2016, there will be discounts on Choice Privileges points, like 36,000 Choice Privileges points for $155. That’s enough for a 3-night stay at certain Choice hotels!
Depending on how you redeem the points, you can get a stay worth much more. In many cases, it’s like saving 50% – or more – on your hotel stay.
Choice hotels aren’t usually fancy, but you’ll find them in many small towns and rural areas. They usually have a pool, big rooms, and free breakfast included in the room rate. And can be a good option for families.
Always do the math before you jump into a deal like this. Depending on how you like to travel and use your points, this can work out nicely for some of y’all!
