UPDATE:   The Chase Sapphire Preferred no longer earns 3X points on the 1st Friday of the month.

If you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, you can earn 3X points on dining today.

With Chase Sapphire Preferred you get 2X points for dining every day.  But on the 1st Friday of the month you earn 1 extra point per dollar when eating out.

How You Can Earn Even MORE Points

You can double dip by registering your Chase Sapphire Preferred card with Rewards Network.  Then if you eat at 1 of Rewards Network’s ~10,000 locations, you can earn an additional 3X to 5X points.

You can earn points with many airlines and hotels.

Rewards Network Partners Include Southwest, United Airlines, Hilton Hotels, and More

With Rewards Network you earn up to 5 points per $1 spent.  So a $100 meal would get you at most 500 points.

Another benefit to using Rewards Network is that it can keep your points from expiring.  For instance, American Airlines miles expire if you don’t add or use points at least once every 18 months.

An Example of How Many Points You Can Earn

Let’s say you’re focused on accumulating Southwest points.  On the 1st Friday of the month you use your Chase Sapphire Preferred card to earn 3X Chase Ultimate Rewards points by spending $40 at a Rewards Network restaurant.

Here’s how many points you’d get:

  • 3 Ultimate Rewards Points X $40 spent at the restaurant = 120 Chase Ultimate Rewards points.
  • 5 Rewards Network Points X $40 spent at the restaurant = 200 Southwest Points

Your Chase Sapphire Preferred card allows you to transfer those 320 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Southwest at a 1:1 ratio.

  • 120 Southwest miles from your Chase Sapphire Preferred
  • 200 Southwest miles from Rewards Network

So on a $40 bill you could earn 320 Southwest Points.

Earning the Bonus Points Is Simple

There’s no coupon or codes to remember.  To get the extra points all you have to do use your Chase Sapphire card and you get points from 2 programs at once!

Save at More Than Just Restaurants

Chase decides what counts as a “dining” purchase.  However, many bars, pubs, and nightclubs also serve food and are counted as dining establishments.  In my experience, many of these also earn the 3X dining points, even if you only order drinks.

Buying Gift Cards at Restaurants

You can buy restaurant gift cards directly from the restaurant to use later.

I can’t see myself going into a restaurant on Friday just to pick up a gift card for 1 extra point per dollar.  But I know some folks who might!

Note: Buying restaurant gift cards from a supermarket with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card will NOT qualify for the 3X points.

Do You Get 3X Points When Dining Abroad?

Yes.  You get the same benefits of the Chase Sapphire Preferred even if you’re outside of the US.  And the Chase Sapphire Preferred does NOT charge foreign transaction fees.  So you will earn the same number of points per dollar.

Bottom Line

Use your Chase Sapphire Preferred card at dining establishment and earn 3X points today.  And you can combine with deal with Rewards Network account to earn even more points.

If you spend $50, you will earn 320 points. So  I wouldn’t buy dinner just to earn a few hundred points.  However, if you have plans to eat out today, use your Chase Sapphire Preferred card to earn extra points.

Is this different than the airline dining programs? What if you have already registered your card with an airline dining program?

You mentioned that the RR Dining program gets 5 SWA miles per dollar spent– but that’s only if you’ve already dined a certain number of times in restaurants affiliated with the program. The base rate is 3 miles/$.

@Alexa @ travelmiamor – It is a very tempting picture!

@Dave – That’s true, but it says “up to 5 points.”
