UPDATE: The Chase Sapphire Preferred no longer earns 3X points on the 1st Friday of the month.
Happy 4th of July to everyone! You can also earn 1 extra point per dollar on dining today!
With the Chase Sapphire Preferred card you usually get 2X points on dining. But on the 1st Friday of the month you earn 3X points!
This isn’t a groundbreaking deal. But it’s a nice little added bonus if you have plans to eat at a restaurant today.
How to Turn 3X Points Into as Much as 8X Points
You can earn even more than 3X points on dining. That’s because with the Rewards Network program, you get up to an additional 5X points.
To earn the points just sign-up for a free Rewards Network account and register your Chase Sapphire Preferred card.
Then you will automatically earn more points when you pay with your Sapphire Preferred card at a qualifying location.
You can earn points with hotels and airlines including:
- American Airlines
- Delta Airlines
- Hilton Hotels
- IHG Rewards
- Southwest Airlines
- United Airlines
A $100 meal would earn at most $100 x 5X points = 500 points
I wouldn’t go to a Rewards Network restaurant, bar, or nightclub just to earn a few hundred points. But it’s an added bonus when I do!
And if you’re lucky, you may even find an offer to earn extra points for dining!
You lose your points with some programs if there is no new account activity. So another benefit to Rewards Network is that it helps keep your points from expiring. For instance, American Airlines miles expire if you don’t add or use points once every 18 months.
An Example of How Many Points You Can Earn
Let’s say you’re focused on accumulating United Airlines miles. On the 1st Friday of the month you use your Chase Sapphire Preferred card at a Rewards Network restaurant. The bill is $50.
Here’s how the points add up:
- 3 points per dollar (Chase 1st Friday) x $50 = 150 Chase Ultimate Rewards points
- 3 points per dollar (Rewards Network) x $50 = 150 United miles
You can transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to United at a 1:1 ratio. This gives you a total of 150 + 150 = ~300 United miles.
How Do You Get the 3X Points With Your Chase Sapphire Preferred Card?
There are NO coupons or codes. Simply pay with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card and you will get the bonus.
You Don’t Have to Order Food or Go to a Restaurant
In my experience you can get 3X points even if you only order drinks.
You can also earn the bonus at bars, pubs, and nightclubs. That’s because many of these places also serve food and will be coded as “dining.”
However, Chase has the final say on which purchases earn 3X points.
You Can Get 3X Points for Gift Cards Too
You can buy gift cards directly from the restaurant to use later. If you use your Chase Sapphire Preferred to buy gift cards from a supermarket, you will NOT get 3X points.
I can’t see myself going into a restaurant on Friday just to pick up a gift card for 1 extra point per dollar. But I know some folks who might!
Do You Get 3X Points When Dining Abroad?
Yes. Use your Chase Sapphire Preferred in foreign countries to get 2X points on dining every day and 3X points on the 1st Friday of the month. The Chase Sapphire Preferred does NOT charge foreign transaction fees.
You can earn an extra point per dollar when you use your Chase Sapphire Preferred card to pay at restaurants. And if you sign-up for a free Rewards Network account, you can earn as much as 8X points per dollar if you dine at a participating restaurant.
I wouldn’t go out of my way just to earn 1 more point per dollar. But if you already have plans to dine out today, remember to use your Chase Sapphire Preferred card.
