Lufthansa is a Star Alliance member, which means you can use Lufthansa miles to book flights on partner airlines such as United Airlines, Singapore Airlines, EVA Airlines, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines, and more.

Check out my series on Lufthansa for ideas on how you can use Lufthansa miles.  Also keep in mind that using Lufthansa miles can include paying high fuel surcharges, but there are some tricks to avoid paying the extra fees.

In short, you can use Lufthansa miles to fly on United within the US for no fuel surcharges!  It is only 12,000 miles for a 1-way flight within the US (except Hawaii & the Virgin Islands) on United in coach!  Or 17,000 Lufthansa miles in first class.

Before you apply for this card, be sure to consider any other Barclaycard cards that you may work better for your travel goals.  Because Barclaycard has become strict about how many cards they allow you to have per year.

Bottom Line

There is 1 week left to get 50,000 bonus miles with the Barclaycard Miles & More World Elite MasterCard after spending $5,000 within 3 months.  The sign-up bonus for this card is usually only 20,000 Lufthansa miles.  The $79 annual fee is not waived.

However, Barclaycard typically only allows you to sign-up for 1 or 2 of their cards per year.  So if you are new to miles & points you may want to choose a Barclaycard with more flexibility like the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite Mastercard or the US Airways card which won’t be around much longer.
