Get a round-trip coach award flight to Europe and beyond for the same price as a domestic award flight!

Coach award seats to Europe on Air France or KLM from 5 cities in the US are 50% off!  Through December 20, 2015, you can book flights for only 12,500 Flying Blue miles each way for travel this winter.

With this deal you can experience the Carnival (Mardi Gras) celebrations in Europe.  (And take advantage of the much-improved exchange rate!)  Or explore Tel Aviv when high temperatures are in the mid-60s.

Visit Athens, Greece, for Only 25,000 Flying Blue Miles Round-Trip in Coach Plus ~$251 in Taxes This Winter

Flying Blue adds fuel surcharges to award flights, but this can still be a fantastic deal for some folks.

And, you probably already have access to Flying Blue miles.  I’ll explain!

What’s the Deal?

Link:   Flying Blue Frequent Flyer Program

Flying Blue is the frequent flyer program for Air France and KLM.  They’re both part of the SkyTeam Alliance, but you have to use Flying Blue miles (not miles from another SkyTeam airline, like Delta or Korean Air) to book a Promo Award ticket.

This month, Flying Blue is celebrating their 10-year anniversary with 50% mileage discounts on certain routes.  But you must book your award by December 20, 2015 and travel between January 15, 2016, and March 15, 2016.

Pay 50 Fewer Miles On Coach Flights To Europe With Flying Blue Promo Awards
Through December 20, 2015, You Can Book Coach Award Flights to Europe for Half the Number of Miles!

The promotion only includes coach award tickets, and you can book 1-way or round-trip flights on Air France or KLM from:

  • Atlanta
  • Boston
  • Houston
  • New York (JFK)
  • Washington, DC (Dulles)

You’ll pay fees and fuel surcharges, which vary depending on the route.  For example, a round-trip flight from New York to Athens, Greece, has fuel surcharges of ~$251.

KLM and Air France fly to Paris and Amsterdam from the US & Canada, but you can connect to other destinations for the same number of miles.

And their definition of Europe has a few surprises!  For example, Israel, Russia, and Turkey are included in the sale.

You can transfer American Express Membership Rewards points, Citi ThankYou points, or Starwood points to Flying Blue if you need more miles!

And if you book an award ticket, you can cancel it with no penalty within 24 hours.

Is It Worth It?

Absolutely!

12,500 Flying Blue miles each way to Europe is a steal!

There Are Lots of Award Seats Available!

When I searched for flights between New York and Athens, I found an award seat every day in February.

But keep in mind that taxes, fees, and fuel surcharges from Europe can often be expensive, too.

Fuel Surcharges Are Extra Fees Added to Your Award Ticket, but It’s Still Cheaper Than Paying for Flights

For example, from Houston to Paris, you’ll pay ~$76 in taxes and fees.  And from Paris back to Houston, you’ll pay ~$146.

Fall in Love With Paris! And Love Saving Money to Visit There, Too! You’d Pay ~$1,230 for the Same Flights

The same flights on Air France cost ~$1,230.  So you’d save a lot of cash and miles on these round-trip non-stop flights from Houston to Paris.

It’s worth it to check your dates to see if you can get a good deal on your tickets!

Get a Good Deal on Award Seats Beyond Europe!

The best part of this deal is that you don’t have to end your trip in Paris or Amsterdam (the hub destinations served by Air France and KLM).

You can connect onward to other cities in Europe, near Asia, and the Middle East for the same number of miles!

Israel Is Considered Part of Europe for Flying Blue Promo Awards. Visit Tel Aviv for 12,500 Miles + Taxes Each Way!

For example, folks in Washington, DC, can visit Tel Aviv 1-way for 12,500 miles and ~$102.  That’s an outstanding deal!

And, there were award seats every day when I searched!

You Can Also Visit Moscow, Istanbul, or Morocco for the Same Number of Miles!

Or you can head all the way to Moscow for 12,500 miles and ~$111.  Even with fuel surcharges considered, that’s a terrific price for an award flight!

There are many other interesting destinations including Turkey and Morocco.  I’ll gladly pay the fuel surcharges to get all the way to the Middle East or North Africa with so few miles!

What If You’re Not in 1 of These Cities?

Southwest – If you need more Southwest points, Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to Southwest.  Plus, if you have the Southwest Companion Pass, a friend can fly with you for (almost) free!

British Airways – If you’re a short flight away from these cities, you can save miles by using British Airways Avios points to book an award flight on American Airlines.  Note that British Airways is changing the price of short-haul North American flights on February 2, 2016.

Chase Ultimate Rewards pointsAmerican Express Membership Rewards points, and Starwood points transfer to British Airways.

Or you could try to find a cheap paid ticket from your home airport to Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, or Washington, DC.  But as always, do the math to see if it makes sense for you.

Because you can’t use miles from other SkyTeam airlines (like Delta) to book Flying Blue Promo Awards, you’ll have to book award tickets with Flying Blue miles.  But they’re very easy to earn!

If you have an American Express card that earns AMEX Membership Rewards points, like The Platinum Card from American Express, The Platinum Card® from American Express Exclusively for Mercedes-Benz, Premier Rewards Gold Card From American Express, or American Express EveryDay Preferred card, you can transfer your points to Flying Blue at a 1:1 ratio.

You Can Transfer AMEX Membership Rewards Points to Flying Blue at 1:1 Ratio

And folks with the Citi Prestige, Citi ThankYou Premier, and Citi Chairman (no longer offered) cards can transfer their Citi ThankYou points directly to Flying Blue at a 1:1 ratio, too.  So there are lots of ways to top off your account to redeem miles for these awards!

You can also transfer points from the American Express Starwood Preferred Guest card to Flying Blue at a 1:1 ratio.

Starwood Points Transfer to Flying Blue at a 1:1 Ratio…and You’ll Get a 5,000 Mile Bonus If You Transfer 20,000 Points

And if you transfer 20,000 Starwood points, you’ll get a 5,000 mile bonus for a total of 25,000 Flying Blue miles – enough for a round-trip coach award to Europe with this promotion!

Note:   Starwood points can take up to 4 weeks to transfer to Flying Blue.  Although in my experience it’s taken from 2 to 12 days.  If you plan on booking, keep in mind your exact award ticket might disappear while waiting for the points to transfer!

Bottom Line

With the new Flying Blue Promo Awards, you can fly to Europe, the Middle East, and Near Asia on Air France or KLM for only 12,500 miles each way this winter from Atlanta, Boston, Houston, New York, or Washington, DC.

But you’ll pay taxes and fees that can vary a lot depending on the route.  So run the numbers before you book!

You must purchase your award seat by December 20, 2015, and travel between January 15, 2016, and March 15, 2016.  This is a great deal for a winter vacation to Europe!

Only travel booked through Air France or KLM directly using Flying Blue miles is eligible for the deal.

American Express Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou points, and Starwood points all transfer to Flying Blue at a 1:1 ratio.  And you’ll get 5,000 bonus miles if you transfer 20,000 Starwood points, which makes this deal even better!

Let me know if you plan a trip!
