Southwest is having a sale with some flights as low as $69 one way.  But Friday & Sunday travel is excluded, so we won’t be booking any quick weekend getaways.

Southwest Fare Sale

Link:  Southwest Fare Sale

Southwest has a fare sale through January 20, 2014 with flights starting at $69 each way for travel from January 25, 2014 to May 21, 2014.

The sale ends at 11:59 pm on January 20, 2014 based on the time zone of the city which you’re flying out of.

Southwest uses a revenue based frequent flyer program, so a fare sale means that both cash AND award bookings using points cost less.

You can book your trip using points even if you’re not sure of your plans, because there are no change fees and you get the points back in your account if you cancel the reservation.

If you cancel a paid flight on Southwest, the ticketed passenger gets a credit which can be used up to 1 year after the booking was made, and there’s no change fee, as long you cancel at least 10 minutes before your flight.

If you’ve already booked trips between January 25, 2014 and May 21, 2014, you can check to see if they cost less since you can cancel and rebook your flights without paying a fee.

Here’s a way to get up to 20% off Southwest fares!

Earning Southwest Points

In case you’re low on points, Chase Ultimate Rewards points from the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Ink Bold or Ink Plus transfer instantly to Southwest Airlines in 1:1 ratio.

And all 4 versions of the Southwest card currently have a 50,000 point sign-up bonus.  2 Southwest cards and few extra points can get you a Southwest Companion Pass which is the best deal in domestic travel!  That’s because you can add a companion to any Southwest ticket for close to 2 years.

Even though Southwest is having a sale, I’m holding off and waiting for a better sale.

I’m not booking anything during Southwest’s current sale fare because Friday & Sunday travel is NOT discounted.  I just can’t take off on Wednesday because the prices are lower!

And this isn’t one of Southwest’s better sales where the prices start at $49.

I’m also not booking because the tickets have lots of restrictions:

1.   You have to buy your ticket at least 14 days in advance

2.   Sale prices are not valid for travel on Fridays & Sundays.

3.  There is a blackout date on February 17, 2014.

4.   Travel to Florida is restricted to Sunday, Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday departures.  And from Florida, you can fly only on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday.

5.  You can only travel from January 25, 2014 to May 21, 2014.

You can read all the restrictions on the Southwest fare sale page.

Bottom Line

Although this isn’t the best Southwest sale, you can use your Companion Pass to save money!  Your companion flies free on BOTH cash and points tickets.

But it doesn’t hurt to check to see if a flight you’ve booked now costs less cash or points.  You can always cancel and re-book at the lower price!

Other airlines haven’t started to match Southwest’s low fares, but I’ll update this post if they do.

can a husband and wife each apply for 50,000 pt southwest credit card?

Million Mile Secrets

@joan antilla – You sure can. But could be better for 1 partner to apply for 2 cards to help get the Southwest Companion Pass.

If you have the points, book now, but wait for their “Distance Based” sale. Those are usually their best sales of the year. Only happens 2-3 times a year though.

Just so everyone knows, you can cancel an award booking without a fee. But if you pay the $10 per person fee for priority boarding, called ‘EarlyBird’, and then cancel the booking, they will NOT refund the EarlyBird fee. You can sign up for EarlyBird up until 36 hours before the flight, so wait until you are certain before you sign up. Otherwise a couple cancelling R/T tickets could be out $40. 🙁

I just canceled m April 2014 flights and rebooked them and saved over 6000 points!

I think you have an error, the companion pass only lasts up to two years right? I hope it’s three..

Million Mile Secrets

@Andrew lai – Thanks! 2 years it is.
