Folks with Nexus phones and tablets can now easily save money on data charges when traveling abroad!
Via CNET, Nexus users on any cell phone network can now use Google’s Project Fi free Wi-Fi Assistant to save monthly data by automatically connecting to secure public Wi-Fi networks.
I think Project Fi is the best and most affordable cell phone service. So expanding this benefit from Project Fi to folks on other networks is terrific!

Google’s Wi-Fi Assistant technology automatically switches between public Wi-Fi networks and cellular networks to maximize free data. And Google ensures a secure connection, so you won’t connect to unsafe networks. This feature was previously reserved for folks using Project Fi service. But now, you can use this technology with any cell phone network!
To use it, you’ll need a Nexus 4, 5, 6, 5x, and 6P smartphone. Or Nexus 7, 9, and 10 tablet. And you’ll have to be using Android 5.1 or higher.
This is a great way for folks who travel and want to stay connected to friends and family. Because you’ll likely save money on expensive international data plans when the Wi-Fi Assistant connects you to any one of the 1 million Wi-Fi networks it accesses throughout the world.
Wi-Fi Assistant is already available for folks with Nexus devices on the US. And it will be available in Canada, Mexico, UK, and other countries within the next few weeks.
Will you use Google’s Wi-Fi Assistant on your Nexus Device?
