1.   Better United Credit Card Offer

Free Frequent Flyer Miles recommends waiting to apply for a United credit card since there will be a better offer coming soon between October 4 and 6.  Frugal Travel Guy says that it should be out on his birthday ( October 4).

So it makes sense to wait for a bit before applying for a United credit card.  Remember that Chase only lets you get the sign-on bonus once per card type, so it pays to sign up for the offer with the most miles or points.

2. Cancels Subscription

Just when I was thinking that perhaps Chase had their act together with the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal (unlike the American Airline, US Air, and Delta shopping malls), we get emails saying that has cancelled our accounts because the offer for 2,500 points was made by a rogue affiliate.

I don’t know the ultimate outcome, but suspect that Chase will let us keep the points  because the PR backlash (if they take back the points) may not be worth it.

Then again, Chase is probably the best run bank in the US, and doesn’t seem to have much appetite for handing out points willy nilly.

The Points Guy offered his thoughts on the cancellation today and I agree with him!

For now, the good news is that we don’t have to call and cancel our accounts with

I have some heavy business travel over the next 10 days so the blog posting may be affected.  The good news is that I’ll get 5 hotel “hits” for the US Air Grand Slam!

Have a great weekend!

rogue or rouge? i did chuckle at the mental picture of a “rouge affiliate.”

Love your blog! Keep up the good work.

One possible blog topic suggestion: best way to review the Forums on Flyer Talk? I have bookmarks to my fav forums with the forums sorted by Thread Start Time descending. What’s the best way to keep track of your favorite Forums? I’m feeling a little overwhelmed? Hope to see your tips in a future blog entry.

Million Mile Secrets

@yournamehere – It would be best to call and cancel if you haven’t got the cancellation email.

@Jellyb – You’re right – there is a 60K offer for elites. Perhaps that is the offer which United will release in October to everyone. It doesn’t hurt to ask for an increased bonus, but I wouldn’t count on it. You have nothing to lose by asking!

@lee – At this point it would be hard to get both bonuses, because this is what Chase’s United card says in the terms & conditions “United MileagePlus Explorer cardmembers will only receive one 25,000 bonus miles award if they apply for both the United Explorer Card and the Continental OnePass Plus Card after 7/19/2011.”

@Eric P – Ha! Good catch (and thanks for letting me know)- I’ve edited the post. As for the forums, I think you can get them by email as well.

Since Continental will be merging into UA program, does it make sense to apply for a Continental card now to get the signup bonus? That would not make me ineligible for this upcoming UA signup bonus, right?

Thanks so much for this great site and helping us to travel for less!

If I remember correctly, the United Explorer card already offers 60k signup bonus for those who have an elite status and spend $25k/year (or just 50k after first purchase). Do you think their flat signup bonus without this $25k/year spending requirement would be 60k in the future? I got this card about two months ago and I am a premier member so I wonder if I could ask for more signup bonus…

I transferred my 2500 to CO immediately, so I imagine I should be all right. No e-mail yet. I still have to call and cancel, correct ? Thanks; ynh
