It just got easier to earn free Southwest flights all across the US and Caribbean!

As many of y’all know, I love the Southwest Companion Pass.  Because your designated travel buddy flies with you for nearly free (for up to 2 years!) on all your paid and award Southwest flights.

Now that the sign-up bonus for the Chase Southwest Premier card has increased to 50,000 Southwest points, it’s much easier to earn the Companion Pass!

Even without the Companion Pass, the welcome bonus is worth ~$715 in travel on Southwest.

Big Travel Is Sweeter With a Friend! Earn the Southwest Companion Pass and Your Friend or Partner Flies With You for Almost Free!

Let’s see what you can get with this card!  And how you can use the bonus for either cheap flights on Southwest or to earn the best deal in domestic travel, the Southwest Companion Pass!

What’s the Deal?

For a limited time, the sign-up bonus on the Chase Southwest Premier card has increased to 50,000 Southwest points after you spend $2,000 on purchases in the 1st 3 months of opening your account.

You’ll also get:

  • 2 Southwest points per $1 you spend on Southwest, hotel partners, car rental partners, and points purchases
  • 1 Southwest point per $1 you spend on everything else
  • 6,000 Southwest points each year on your card anniversary
  • 1,500 tier-qualifying points after each $10,000 in purchases (up to 15,000 tier-qualifying points per calendar year)
  • No foreign transaction fees

The $99 annual fee is NOT waived for the 1st year.

Where Will You Go With 50,000 Southwest Points?

Note:   Each version of the Southwest card is considered a different card product, so you CAN get the Chase Southwest Premier if you already have the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card, for example.

And you can earn the bonus again if you’ve had this card in the past.  But only if you’ve cancelled it and you received the bonus more than 24 months ago.

If you recently (within the last ~3 months) applied for this card with the lower 25,000 point bonus, it’s worth calling Chase to see if they’ll match you to the better offer!

What Can You Do With 50,000 Southwest Points?

Link:   How Will Southwest’s New Award Pricing Impact You?

Southwest’s frequent flyer program is revenue-based, which means the number of points required for an award ticket depends on the cost of a paid flight.  And Southwest points are worth between ~1.25 and ~1.43 cents each, depending on the route and the date.

So 50,000 Southwest points is worth ~$625 to ~$715 in Southwest flights.  And almost double that if you have the Southwest Companion Pass!

Use Your Points to Fly to 1 of Southwest’s New International Destinations, Like the Bahamas

To qualify for the Southwest Companion Pass, you need to earn 110,000 Southwest points in a calendar year.  And the Chase Southwest card sign-up bonuses count!

By signing-up for 2 cards which earn 50,000 points each, you’ll have 104,000 Southwest points (100,000 points in sign-up bonuses + 4,000 points from minimum spending).

You do NOT have to spend $6,000 to earn the remaining 6,000 points!  That’s because there easy ways to earn the extra 6,000 Southwest points!  Just make sure you do NOT make these 3 mistakes.

Share Your LUV of Travel When You Earn the Southwest Companion Pass!

With 110,000 Southwest points you can get ~$1,375 to ~$1,573 in free travel.  But because your companion flies with you for (almost) free, you’ll get double the value (worth up to ~$3,146).

That’s an incredible deal!  It’s 1 of the main reasons we fly Southwest almost exclusively in the US.

Plus, everyone always gets 2 free checked bags!  And if you need to cancel or change your flight, there are no fees.  If you cancel, you’ll receive a credit towards Southwest travel good for 1 year.

Remember, you’ll earn the bonus on Southwest cards only after the statement in which you completed the minimum spending closes.  Check out my post on how to best time your spending to earn the Southwest Companion Pass!

If you miss the offer this time, the increased bonus usually comes around again every few months.  That said, 50,000 points is typically the highest sign-up bonus offered for this card.

Other Ways to Save With the Southwest Premier Card

Earning the Southwest Companion Pass with the Southwest Premier card also effectively doubles the value of the airline credit perk you get with the Citi Prestige card.

That’s because with the Citi Prestige, you get $250 in statement credits toward airline fees each calendar year.  Including airfare!

Use the Citi Prestige to Pay for Southwest Flights and Effectively Double the Value of Your Yearly $250 Airline Credit When You Have the Southwest Companion Pass

Because your companion flies with you for almost free, it’s like getting $500 worth of Southwest airfare credit when you pay for Southwest tickets with the Citi Prestige.

And because the Southwest Premier card is a Visa, you’ll have access to Visa Discounts.  Current deals include 15% off at Kohl’s and JCPenney.

Bottom Line

The sign-up bonus on the Chase Southwest Premier card has been increased to 50,000 Southwest points after you spend $2,000 on purchases in the 1st 3 months of opening your account.

You’ll get ~$625 to ~$715 in Southwest flights from the sign-up bonus.  And double that if you have the Southwest Companion Pass!

This is a terrific deal for folks trying to earn nearly-free flights with Southwest Companion Pass!  Combined with another 50,000 point card, like the Chase Southwest Premier Business, you’ll get most of the way to the 110,000 Southwest points you need in a calendar year.

I applied for the business card, but I got denied. They said I opened up too many cards and I don’t have a valid business. What should I do? But I did get the Southwest premier card

For anybody still monitoring this thread, this link for the Premier card with the 50K bonus was displayed on an ad when using Southwest’s in-flight wifi:

https://creditcards.chase.com/a1/southwest/mobileinflight?CELL=6WBN

I received an email from Southwest stating the offer end October 7, 2015.

Question: Is there a way to tell when the 50k bonuses will end? I really want to wait a bit longer before applying so I can have more time after the Dec. statements close. Or, do you think the offer will come back again by the end of 2015?

Love this site, thanks so much!

you mention 3 different southwest cards but i only see two listed, the premier and the plus. what is the 3rd card?

thanks.
