Possible good news for folks who haven’t yet booked their holiday travel!

Via One Mile at a Time, you may find lower fares with American Airlines when you search on international American Airlines websites.  Up to ~75% less!

I had a difficult time replicating many lower fares.  But I found some destinations that had many more available seats than the US website.

Commenters on One Mile at a Time suggest these cheaper fares have been loaded by mistake.  So if you find a cheap fare and book it, there’s a possibility your ticket could be canceled.

Check International Websites for Your Holiday Airfare

One Mile at a Time has reported having success finding airfare on American Airlines’ Italian website that is up to 75% off the fare posted on the US website.  That’s a great deal!!  And a good method to check out before you purchase expensive holiday travel.

I’ve written about a similar trick to save money on Norwegian Air flights.

Searching for airfare on foreign American Airlines sites is easy.  At the top of the American Airlines website, there is a picture of a US flag.  Click it!

Click the US Flag and Select Another Country

You’ll then see a drop-down menu with a list of countries.  Click a country, and search for airfare like you normally would.  That’s all there is to it!

Your Results May Vary

I had trouble finding much lower fares on the overseas websites than I could find on the US website.  I checked a few sites in Europe, Latin America, and Asia.  But prices weren’t much different.

But I’m confident they are out there.  So see if it works for your route!

Something I noticed while I tried to find lower fares on other American Airlines websites was more available seats than the US website.

The Ireland Website Was Selling Seats from Cincinnati to Toronto During Thanksgiving – But the US Website Was Not!

This wasn’t the case for every route, but I noticed it a couple times.  I was able to navigate all the way to the final payment page!

So if your holiday route is sold out on the US website, take a look on a few international websites before you give up!

Use the Right Card

If you find a fare you like, make sure to use a card that will give you the most rewards.  And one that doesn’t have foreign transaction fees!

Because a lot of international websites will charge you in their local currency.  You could be charged a foreign transaction fee while sitting in your living room!

For no foreign transaction fees and bonus rewards, book with cards like:

Bottom Line

You might find discounted airfare and more available seats on American Airlines international websites versus the US website!  But your results may vary.

Hopefully you’ll find a discount or a hard-to-find seat this holiday season.  Let me know if you find a good deal!

I forgot what airline this happened on but 3-5 years ago when I tried using a Eropean page to buy a ticket on an airline’s site I couldn’t because ultimately I needed to pay with my US credit card in dollars. I asked an airline rep and she said the same. So I wonder how people are doing this.
