Normally, Citi ThankYou points transfer to Virgin Atlantic at a 1:1 ratio. With this promotion, you’ll earn 1,250 Virgin Atlantic miles for every 1,000 Citi ThankYou points you move.
I’ll explain if it’s a good deal!
Virgin Atlantic 25% Transfer Bonus
You’ll earn 25% more Virgin Atlantic miles when you transfer Citi ThankYou points to Virgin Atlantic through March 2, 2017.
I do NOT recommend moving points to Virgin Atlantic unless there’s a specific award ticket you’d like to book.
Virgin Atlantic adds big fuel surcharges to their own (and many partner) flights. It’s usually NOT worth it to book Virgin Atlantic coach award tickets, because the taxes and fees are often close to the cost of a paid flight!
That said, there are instances where redeeming Virgin Atlantic miles can be useful. For example, you can book Delta award flights with Virgin Atlantic miles with no fuel surcharges (unless your flight originates in Europe).
Virgin Atlantic Award Chart Changes
The biggest change is the introduction of peak and off-peak award pricing. So depending on when you fly, you could pay fewer (or more!) miles.
If there’s an award you want that’s increasing in price, you might consider transferring Citi ThankYou points to Virgin Atlantic with the 25% bonus. Transfers typically take a couple of days, but Citi says they could take as many as 14 days.
So there’s a slight risk involved by transferring points now, if you want to take advantage of lower Virgin Atlantic award pricing before January 16, 2017.
You’ll earn a 25% bonus when you transfer Citi ThankYou points to Virgin Atlantic until March 2, 2017.
I don’t recommend transferring Citi ThankYou points to Virgin Atlantic unless you have a specific award flight in mind.
That said, there are changes coming to Virgin Atlantic’s award chart starting January 16, 2017. If there’s an award you’d like to book now because it’s increasing in price, it’s worth considering this transfer promotion.
