Don’t forget, today is the last day to activate the quarterly bonus on the Chase Freedom card!

If you haven’t activated the bonus yet, you can still get 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points or 5% cash back on all your spending at Amazon, Zappos, and many department stores until December 31, 2014.

This is a great way to earn lots of extra points if you haven’t finished your holiday shopping yet!  Remember, not all department stores are on the list, so double check before you spend.

Ho Ho Ho! You Can Still Activate the Bonus for Your Holiday Shopping…but Today’s the Last Day!

And if you do your shopping online, you can earn extra points or cash back by checking sites like Evreward for the best shopping portal bonuses.

You can earn 5 points per $1 you spend, or 5% cash back, on categories that change every 3 months.

For October, November, and December 2014, the Chase Freedom bonus categories are Amazon, Zappos, and department stores.  You’ll earn the bonus on spending in these categories, up to $1,500 this quarter.

You Can Earn the Bonus at Major Department Stores Like JCPenney

You must have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or Chase Ink Bold (no longer available) to transfer Ultimate Rewards points to hotels and airlines.

But you have to activate the bonus each quarter.  It doesn’t happen automatically.

If you activate today, the bonus is retroactive, so you’ll earn 5% (up to $1,500 in spending, or 7,500 Ultimate Rewards points) for purchases you made in the bonus categories starting from October.

When Can We Activate Next Quarter’s Bonus?

Starting tomorrow, you can activate the bonus for the 1st quarter of 2015.  The bonus categories for January, February, and March 2015 are grocery stores (not including Target and Walmart), Starbucks, and movie theaters.

Bottom Line

Today is the last day to activate the Chase Freedom card 4th quarter category bonus for Amazon, Zappos, and department stores like Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Kohl’s.

You’ll earn 5 Ultimate Rewards points per $1 spent, or 5% cash back on these categories until December 31, 2014.

And from December 15, 2014, you can register for the 2015 1st quarter bonus categories (grocery stores, Starbucks, and movie theaters).

Hi Daraius & Emily,

Have you guys tried using the chase freedom to purchase walmart gift cards through amazon.com and gotten 5 points/dollar?

Love your blog! Many thanks.

@Robert – That is likely over the regular earning rate.

@Sam S – That should work!

Dear Darius,

When I log into my CHASE UR Rewards page for Chase shopping portal its says I would earn 6 pt/$:

6% total cash back

6% includes the 1% unlimited cash back you earn on everyday purchases

Does this already factor in the 5% bonus for using the Freedom card at a dept store or would I be earning another 5% on top of that?

When I go through the same CHASE portal but instead select another credit card such as the Sapphire or Chase Ink Plus, it offers 4%. For those I assume that I would get the 4% for shopping there and if I use the Freedom I would get another 5%?

Please advise.

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up as always. I picked up the freedom a few weeks ago with the higher signup bonus. 5x on Amazon during Christmas time… Too good to pass up.
