Million Mile Secrets reader Lynn commented:
Is the Freedom card offer also good using the referral link? Thanks!
Lynn can get a 20,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards point sign-up bonus even if she uses her referral link to the Freedom card. The 20,000 point offer ends later today!
But you’ll still get the bonus if you are approved for the card after the offer closes, as long as you applied before the offer changed.
20,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points on Chase Freedom
Link: 20,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points on Chase Freedom
Lynn can get 20,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points or $200 in cash back after spending $500 within 3 months with the Freedom, instead of the usual 10,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points or $100 in cash back.
Because Lynn can get 2X the normal sign-up bonus, this is a great offer!
Lynn should keep the Freedom card because it has no annual fee, and she can build a long relationship with Chase (which has the best miles and points cards) and build her credit score.
When Lynn spends $1,500 in each quarterly 5X points bonus category, she can earn an additional $300 cash back or 30,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points a year (7,500 points per quarter X 4 quarters in a year).
Lynn can redeem the points for cash back (5% cash back isn’t too shabby and some folks prefer cash back).
Or she can transfer her Chase Ultimate Rewards points to the Sapphire Preferred, (no longer offered) Ink Bold, or Ink Plus cards and then transfer to airline or hotel partners like United Airlines and Hyatt.

Lynn can follow my step-by-step instructions on how to transfer points from her Freedom to a card which allows her to transfer them to hotels and airlines!
Referral Bonus
If Lynn has the Freedom or the Sapphire Preferred card, under Chase’s referral program she could get 5,000 Ultimate Rewards points for referring her friends for the Freedom, Sapphire Preferred, or Sapphire card IF she was selected by Chase.
The referral program only applies to the Freedom, Sapphire Preferred, and the Sapphire (non-preferred) version, and does NOT apply to airline or hotel cards such as the British Airways card, Hyatt card, etc.
Lynn can get refer up to 10 friends for a total of 50,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points. Referrals must be made by January 31, 2015. And the referred person has to use the card by May 31, 2015.
Lynn would NOT get a 20,000 point sign-up bonus by referring someone. The most Lynn could get from 1 referral would be 5,000 points.
Note: Chase limits how often folks can refer others. Sometimes, the referral bonus isn’t offered on Freedom card, but offered on Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire cards. So you should check each of those cards to see if the referral bonus is offered. Note: The Chase referral program is targeted to select Chase card holders. So Lynn might not be able to refer a friend and get the 5,000 referral bonus points if she was not chosen. Instead, Lynn could get a message stating,The program is currently being tested and only eligible customers will be able to get through the authentication screen to refer a friend.
Lynn shouldn’t feel bad if she wasn’t targeted to be part of Chase’s referral program, I wasn’t either!
Referee Sign-Up Bonus
If Lynn refers someone to the Freedom card and they apply using her link, she gets a bonus of 5,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points. And the person approved for the card gets the current sign-up bonus at the time of the application.
Bottom Line
Lynn can get a sign-up bonus of 20,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards from the Chase Freedom card after spending $500 within 3 months. She can use a referral link or affiliate link to sign-up.
But she would NOT get 20,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points if she refers someone to the Freedom and they apply.
Lynn would only get 5,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points for referring someone to the Freedom, Sapphire Preferred, or Sapphire card.
