You can still earn bonus points on all your gas stations, movie theaters, and Starbucks purchases from January 1, 2014 to March 31, 2014. But you have to register for the bonus by March 14, 2014.
What Are Chase Freedom Category Bonuses?
You can earn 5 points per $1 you spend, or 5% cash back, on categories that rotate every 3 months.
For January, February, and March 2014, the Chase Freedom bonus categories are movie theaters, gas stations, and Starbucks. You’ll earn the bonus on spending in these categories, up to $1,500 per quarter.
You must have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, (no longer offered) Chase Ink Bold or Chase Ink Plus, to transfer Ultimate Rewards points to hotels and airlines.
But you have to activate the bonus each quarter. It doesn’t happen automatically.
Activating the quarterly bonus is retroactive meaning that you will earn 5% (up to $1,500 or 7,500 Ultimate Rewards points) for all gas stations, movie theaters, and Starbucks purchases made in January, February, and March.
What About Next Quarter?
You can activate next quarter’s bonus categories starting March 15, 2014.
For April, May, and June 2014, you’ll earn 5 points per $1 you spend, or 5% cash back, at restaurants and Lowe’s home improvement stores.
You’ll still earn 5 Ultimate Rewards points per $1 spent, or 5% cash back on these categories until March 31, 2014.
And from March 15, 2014, you can register for the 2nd quarter category bonus for restaurants and Lowe’s home improvement stores.
