Elite status is hard to earn but can make all the difference when traveling because it can get you valuable upgrades and perks. These perks are absolutely incredible when traveling internationally because you might be on a plane for 10+ hours at a time.
Earning elite status is a lot of work, and generally requires a ton of flying to get. But for a very limited time, you can earn elite status with SkyTeam thanks to a simple status match that works with hotel elite status you can get by having certain credit cards, like the Hilton Honors American Express Ascend Card or The Platinum Card® from American Express.
Convert Hilton Elite Status to SkyTeam Status for a Limited-Time
Aerolineas Argentinas is a SkyTeam partner airline that is currently running a status match promotion to win over new customers. At its surface this may not sound exciting, there are plenty of status match opportunities out there with most airlines, but this opportunity is a bit unique.
Through December 21, 2018, you can request an elite status match with Aerolineas Argentinas using most other airline elite status or hotel elite status like Hilton Honors Gold elite status. Your status will match to either Gold or Platinum status on Aerolineas Argentinas, which earns you SkyTeam Elite and SkyTeam Elite Plus. So even if you never fly on Aerolineas Argentinas, you’ll get perks when flying on SkyTeam airlines, like Delta, Air France, or Korean Air.

While status matches are nothing new (most airlines happily do this), it is rare that we see airlines allow status match from hotel elite status. The fact that Hilton Gold elite status is specifically mentioned in the promotion’s terms is also particularly exciting because this status is easy to earn with a credit card.
Here are some cards that offer automatic Hilton Gold elite status or higher:
- The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card
- Hilton Honors American Express Ascend Card
- Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express (Earns Hilton Honors Diamond Elite Status)
- The Business Platinum® Card from American Express
- The Platinum Card from American Express
By just keeping any of these cards active, you will have Hilton Honors elite status, which can be used to status match you ultimately to a SkyTeam Elite status through this promotion with Aerolineas Argentinas. Such a great deal!
If you want to take advantage of this offer, you will first need to sign up for an Aerolineas account. After you are signed up, you will want to submit your information via email to firstname.lastname@example.org with:
- The subject “Desafío Status Match”
- Your new Aerolíneas Plus member number
- Your full name and email address
- A copy of the elite status card or statement that shows your eligible elite status
They will award you either Gold or Platinum status on Aerolineas based on their own determination of equivalent status. Aerolineas Gold elite status will correspond with SkyTeam Elite status while Aerolineas Platinum will correspond with SkyTeam Elite Plus.
SkyTeam Elite earns you
- Preferred seating
- Priority check-in
- Priority boarding
- Extra free checked baggage
SkyTeam Elite Plus earns you:
- All benefits of SkyTeam Elite
- Priority baggage handling
- Lounge access (but not while flying Delta domestically)
These are great perks for international travel from a hotel elite status earned automatically on a credit card. While they don’t specifically mention IHG or Marriott elite status in their list, they do mention that the list is not exhaustive. I don’t see any reason why comparable elite status from other hotels wouldn’t also work also and is worth submitting to them. They do wish to see that you have at least 3 months of eligibility remaining on the elite status that you submit for the status match.
Once awarded, you have elite status for 1 year.
Note: Folks with elite status on an airline could be better off using Delta’s elite status challenge (you can take advantage of it once every 3 years). This might earn you more perks while flying domestically on Delta, in addition to SkyTeam elite status. Delta will status match virtually all US airlines and most major international ones. But this is a challenge, not a straight match. So you’d get the status for 3 months, during which time you could earn it for the rest of the year.
The value from the Aerolineas status match is that they are willing to match hotel elite status, which is unusual for most status match programs. Visit their promotion page for all the details. You will need to use Google translate as the page is not available in English.
