Earning the sign-up bonus for the Chase Sapphire Reserve will be harder for lots of y’all. Because of Chase’s new rules regarding the Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Preferred cards.
But the good news is, folks who already have the Chase Sapphire Reserve can now refer a friend and earn up to 50,000 bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards points per year!
That’s a big deal, because 10,000 points are worth at least $150 in travel with the Chase Sapphire Reserve!

Chase Ultimate Rewards points are my favorite kind of points to earn. And they’re the best for beginners in the miles and points hobby, too! That’s because they’re flexible, have great travel transfer partners, and they’re relatively easy to earn.
So I was bummed to hear that Chase changed their rules about earning the sign-up bonuses on their Sapphire cards. Customers will NO longer be able to sign-up for a second Sapphire card. This means that, for example, folks who already have a Chase Sapphire Preferred will no longer be approved for a Chase Sapphire Reserve card, or vice versa.
But a silver lining is that Chase is offering a 10,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards point refer-a-friend bonus for the Chase Sapphire Reserve card! Here’s what you need to know:
- You’ll get 10,000 bonus points for each friend you refer who is approved for the card
- You can earn a maximum of 50,000 bonus points per calendar year from refer-a-friend offers
- You can invite a maximum of 25 email addresses in a 24 hour period
- If your friend is approved, you’ll receive bonus points within 8 weeks of approval. The bonus will appear on your statement as Refer-A-Friend bonus
So if you have a partner who collects miles & points, one of you could sign-up for the card first, and then refer the other a little later! That way you’ll end up with an extra 10,000 bonus points.
Go to Chase’s refer-a-friend page, enter your account information, and type the email addresses of the friends you want to refer.
Just make sure you do NOT recommend the card to someone who has opened 5+ cards from any bank (NOT counting Chase business cards and these other business cards) in the past 24 months. Because it’s unlikely they’ll be approved.
Bottom Line
Chase is now offering a 10,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards point bonus for referring friends to the Chase Sapphire Reserve card. And you can earn up to 50,000 points per calendar year!
This is a nice offer, especially after Chase has made it much more difficult to be approved for multiple Chase Sapphire credit cards.
If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve, go to the Chase Sapphire Reserve refer-a-friend page, enter your account information, and type the email addresses of the friends you want to refer!
