Million Mile Secrets reader Brent teaches English in a public high school in Reno, Nevada. He’s been selected as one of 30 finalists of the Hilton HHonors Teacher Trek competition!
The final 30 were selected by both teachers as well as education experts at the Institute of International Education (which helped institute the Fulbright Scholars program).
The winning teachers get:
- $2,500 to be used for cultural activities and enhancements at their schools
- $6,000 to take a “trip of a lifetime” and share their travels & cultural knowledge with students
Brent plans on staying in Hilton hotels and couch-surfing in Tokyo, Moscow, Prague, London, and Stratford-upon-Avon. He’ll watch different Shakespeare productions and discuss with both the actors and audience how the plays resonate within that culture.
“The reason that Shakespeare is popular throughout the world is that he writes about the human condition, and the human condition is the same whether one lives in the fast-paced megalopolis of Tokyo, or the glacial outreaches of the Arctic Circle.
My belief is that by placing Shakespeare in a global context, students will not only understand the plays in greater depth, but also be better equipped to push past the stereotypes and misperceptions that too often characterize our understandings of other cultures. Ultimately, that’s my goal—to help students learn to think broadly and deeply about the world in which they live.”
Brent has a real chance at making the world a better place, so please vote for him in the Hilton Teacher Trek competition. You can enter once per day up to April 30, 2013 and you will be entered for a chance to win $250 gift cards.
