Million Mile Secrets reader Brent teaches English in a public high school in Reno, Nevada.  He’s been selected as one of 30 finalists of the Hilton HHonors Teacher Trek competition!

The final 30 were selected by both teachers as well as education experts at the Institute of International Education (which helped institute the Fulbright Scholars program).

The winning teachers get:

  • $2,500 to be used for cultural activities and enhancements at their schools
  • $6,000 to take a “trip of a lifetime” and share their travels & cultural knowledge with students

Brent plans on staying in Hilton hotels and couch-surfing in Tokyo, Moscow, Prague, London, and Stratford-upon-Avon.  He’ll watch different Shakespeare productions and discuss with both the actors and audience how the plays resonate within that culture.

Brent writes:

“The reason that Shakespeare is popular throughout the world is that he writes about the human condition, and the human condition is the same whether one lives in the fast-paced megalopolis of Tokyo, or the glacial outreaches of the Arctic Circle.

My belief is that by placing Shakespeare in a global context, students will not only understand the plays in greater depth, but also be better equipped to push past the stereotypes and misperceptions that too often characterize our understandings of other cultures.  Ultimately, that’s my goal—to help students learn to think broadly and deeply about the world in which they live.”

Brent has a real chance at making the world a better place, so please vote for him in the Hilton Teacher Trek competition.  You can enter once per day up to April 30, 2013 and you will be entered for a chance to win $250 gift cards.

I’ve been browsing online more than 4 hours

today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours.

It is pretty worth enough for me. Personally, if all webmasters and bloggers made

good content as you did, the net will be much more useful than ever before.

Thanks Joey! Italy was one of the places I seriously considered, but I ended up choosing Prague because I heard that its Shakespeare festival was more well-respected than Rome’s… this wasn’t done without serious second guessing, though!

Just voted. Good luck! I’m curious why you’re not visiting Italy, where several Shakespearean plays were set (i.e. Verona, Venice, etc.)

Jenny, thank you for voting!

iahphx, I read it as they would give cash as well. But thanks for pointing it out… it’s definitely something I’ll keep an eye on!

Brent — Glad to hear they’re giving the winner money to help pay the taxes.

And at least from the description, it sounds like the winner gets cash to do the trip — not free hotel rooms and airline tickets (or the equivalent in loyalty points). You’d better make sure, though, because it is extremely bad to “win” free trips and loyalty points, due to the high valuation the sponsor is likely to put on them. Honestly, it’s better to do things like buy Vanilla Reload cards than win a “free trip.”
