1. Hawaiian Air Increases Virgin Atlantic Awards. I wrote earlier that using Hawaiian Air miles for award flights on Virgin Atlantic was a great use of Hawaiian Air miles and shared my experience booking an award. That was because the award chart was reasonable – only 100,000 Hawaiian Air miles to London and 140,000 miles to the rest of the world – and because you didn’t pay the expensive fuel surcharges when using Hawaiian Air miles.
One Mile at a Time reports that Hawaiian Air has changed the award chart and Virgin Atlantic awards have got much more expensive. The moderately bad news is that an award from the US East coast to London in Upper Class is 125,000 miles instead of 100,000 miles, so a 25% increase. The full blown bad news is that the award redemptions to, say, Africa which would have cost 140,000 miles now costs 250,000 miles – 125,000 miles from the US to London and another 125,000 miles from London to Africa.
If you do have Hawaiian Air miles you can transfer them at a 1:2 ratio to Hilton hotels and the Bank of America/Hawaii Hawaiian Air cards are quite churnable.
2. Transfer BMI Points to British Airways. Frequent Flyer University explains how to transfer British Midland points to British Airways Avios. You have until December 31, 2012 to move the points from your British Midlands account to British Airways Avios. British Midlands often had sign-up bonuses for signing up for their frequent flyer program so you may have some of their miles!
3. Membership Rewards Transfer Bonus. The Points Guy explains how to take advantage of the 35% transfer bonus when you transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to Virgin Atlantic.
This bonus is valid up to December 29, 2012. Virgin Atlantic points transfer to Hilton at a 2:1 ratio, so with the transfer bonus you can transfer 1 Membership Rewards points to 1.35 Virgin Atlantic Miles to 2.7 Hilton Honors points.
This could be a good transfer option if you’re looking for more Hilton hotel points. On the other hand, it is quite easy to earn Hilton points with the Citi, American Express, Bank of America, and Bank of Hawaii credit cards, so you could save your Membership Rewards points for flights.
