I recently went to Costa Rica and saved over $1,300 thanks to 2 credit card bonuses! It was my first time to Costa Rica, and it won’t be my last. November through April is the dry season, making it a great time to visit. We flew round-trip on Southwest Airlines for ~$170 TOTAL (~$85 per person) in taxes and fees, plus ~20,000 total Southwest points. These flights would have normally cost us ~$850, making it a great way to get Big Travel with Small Money! We also stayed 4 nights in the perfect romantic rainforest eco-retreat for FREE using Capital One miles, saving us $500!

~4 Flights with the Chase Ink Business Preferred
I transferred Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Southwest Airlines and booked 2 flights into San Jose, Costa Rica, for 20,000 miles round-trip. Thanks to the Southwest Companion Pass, my partner flew with me for no extra miles. Both round-trip tickets cost ~$170 total!
To put that into perspective, you can earn 80,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points with the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. $5,000 may sound like a lot, but here are 40 Powerful Ways to Meet Credit Card Minimum Spend that you probably haven’t thought about! When I get approved for a new credit card, almost ALL of my spending gets put on that new card. 80,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points would be enough for ~3-4 round-trip flights (4 flights X 20,000 Southwest points = 80,000 total points) to Costa Rica!
5-Night Stay at the Chilamate Rainforest Eco-Retreat with the Capital One Venture
We stayed 4 nights in Sarapiqui, a small town known for white water rafting. Rooms at the Chilamate Rainforest Eco-Retreat are only ~$110 per night. You can use the 50,000 Capital One miles earned from the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card after spending $3,000 in the first three months.
Because each Venture mile is worth 1 cent each, this bonus is worth $500 in travel — that’s enough for at least 4 nights! If you book in advance, request private room #1, which has a gorgeous outdoor patio with a hammock to read and relax.
What To Do in Sarapiqui, Costa Rica
Not only is this retreat beautiful with lots of walking paths and lounge-y areas to explore, but it’s also run by 2 extremely wonderful, caring people. Meghan and Davis own the hotel and work very hard to enrich the community. Meghan referred me to a half-day trip to a local, organic farm that was one of the highlights of our visit to Costa Rica!
White water rafting is highly recommended in Costa Rica, and we had an excellent time in Sarapiqui rafting through the river there (my first time!) . Rafting was much easier than I had initially thought, and I think it’s something everyone can try at least once. 🙂
