From March 22, 2014, American Express Platinum cardholders could no longer enter American Airlines Admirals Club and US Airways Clubs. But for the rest of April, Citi and American Airlines will give you a free day pass when you show your AMEX Platinum card at Admiral’s Club and US Airways Club lounges.
Good Will or Clever Marketing?
Link: Citi Executive 100,000 Mile Card
Because the Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard is now the only card that gets you free entry into American Airlines Admirals Club and US Airways Club lounges, it sounds like Citi is targeting AMEX Platinum customers who are unhappy about losing this perk.
Until April 30, 2014, Citi will have
staff ambassadors in American Airlines Admirals Club and US Airways Club lounges. When you show your AMEX Platinum card, they’ll give you a free day pass. But I suspect you’ll be getting a Citi Executive sales pitch as an added bonus! 🙂
This is a smart move by Citi. Combined with a 100,000 mile bonus, this is a clever way to encourage disgruntled AMEX customers to sign-up for the Citi Executive card.
Some AMEX Platinum cardholders may not be aware of the change, so this deal might soften the blow for them, too.
Other AMEX Platinum cardholders may not care about losing American Airlines lounge access, because they can still enter Centurion and Delta Airlines lounges with their card. But there are very few Centurion lounges, and to use Delta lounges, you have to be flying on Delta! So the AMEX Platinum isn’t as good as it used to be.
I’m curious to know what kind of sales pitch Citi representatives will use on folks who take advantage of this deal. So let me know if you use your AMEX Platinum to enter American Airlines and US Airways lounges this month!
Citi and American Airlines will give you a free lounge day pass when you show your American Express Platinum card at American Airlines Admirals Club and US Airways Club lounges. But only until the end of April.
Please let me know about your experience! Did you get a hard sell for the card?
