There’s also a great Southwest fare sale right now!  I found flights from Long Beach to Las Vegas on June 4, 2017, for just $39 one-way.

Fare sales are raining from the sky!  And whether you want to head to Asia, Australia, Europe, or just stay in the US, there’s something for everyone!

1.   West Coast to Australia & New Zealand for ~$619+

Link:   View From the Wing

You can fly from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Sydney in coach for as low as $619 round-trip for travel in May and August through November 2017.  You can actually get a ticket for as low as $604 round-trip, but the added connections and airport changes are NOT worth the savings!

You can also fly round-trip from Los Angeles to Auckland in coach for $619 in May and August 2017.

To find these low prices, you’ll have to use the Momondo website.

You can check View From the Wing for how to book.  Or see my posts for how to use Google Flights and ITA Matrix to find sale dates.  Then book directly with Momondo.

2.   East Coast to Europe for ~$307+

Link:   Frequent Miler

You can buy ~$307+ round-trip flights in coach to Spain and Sweden from at least 4 US cities:

  • Boston
  • Miami
  • New York
  • Philadelphia

But let me know if you find other cities!

Most flights I spotted are closer to $350.  For example, I found a round-trip coach flight from New York (EWR) to Barcelona from November 6, 2017, to November 13, 2017, for $361.

Again, I found the lowest prices with Momondo.  You can check Frequent Miler for how to book.

3.   Several US Cities to India for ~$498+

Link:   Secret Flying

There are several US cities (coast to coast!) that have cheap flights to Mumbai and Delhi, India, starting at just ~$498 round-trip in coach:

  •  Boston
  • Lost Angeles
  • Miami
  • New York
  • San Francisco
  • Washington, DC

These flights are with Virgin Atlantic and Jet Airways.  Travel dates are available from May to November 2017, excluding the summer months.

For example, I found a round-trip coach flight from Washington, DC (IAD), to Mumbai for just $499 for flights on November 14, 2017, to November 21, 2017.

I used Momondo to find these flights.  Check Secret Flying for how to book.

4.   Southwest Fares Starting at $39 One-Way

Link:   Southwest Fare Sale

When you book by March 16, 2017, you can get a big discount on Southwest fares for domestic travel between:

  • March 28, 2017, and June 14, 2017
  • August 22, 2017, and September 27, 2017

And international travel from:

  • April 18, 2017, through May 19, 2017
  • August 15, 2017, through September 29, 2017

Flights start at just $39.  And the number of Southwest points you’ll spend on an award flight depends on its cash price.  So when Southwest tickets cost less money, they’ll also cost fewer points!

These fares are only valid for non-stop flights.  Most domestic travel is only valid on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.  Check out the full Terms & Conditions to decide if this fare sale will work with your travel plans!

Southwest Tips

In addition to the savings, there are lots of other benefits to flying Southwest including:

  • Cancel Without Penalty – You can always book now and cancel later.  On award flights the points and taxes will be refunded.  And if you book a paid flight, as long as you cancel within 10 minutes before your flight, you’ll get a credit towards another Southwest flight (good for 1 year)
  • Change Without Fees – If your plans change, you can make adjustments to your flight for free.  However, if your new flight costs more, you’ll have to pay the difference.
  • 2 Checked Bags for Free – Every passenger gets 2 free checked bags.  This saves you ~$25 per bag.
  • Bring Someone Along for the Ride for Free – With the Southwest Companion Pass, a friend or family member flies with you for free for up to 2 years!  This is an amazing deal and it’s the reason why Emily and I fly Southwest almost exclusively on domestic flights.  You can earn the Companion Pass in 8 easy steps!

Virgin Atlantic Tips

With Virgin Atlantic, you can earn loyalty miles based on distance traveled!  So, this sale can be a great way to earn Virgin Atlantic miles!

Note:  You have 24 hours to cancel a Virgin Atlantic ticket after you book to get a full refund.

Folks with the Southwest Companion Pass could fly to cities included in the sales very cheaply.  That’s because with the Companion Pass, your companion flies with you for almost free on both paid and award tickets.

Hotel Information

If you book a sale flight, remember there are lots of ways to get cheap or free hotel rooms with points from credit card bonuses and spending.

To find hotels that can be booked with points, I use Hotel Hustle (which even shows you if rooms are actually available!) or AwardMapper.

Remember, you can transfer flexible points like Chase Ultimate Rewards or American Express Membership Rewards to different hotel programs.

Note:  If you prefer to book paid stays, check out discount sites like Orbitz, Expedia, or TravelPony for deals.  But remember you won’t get stay credits or points (and might not have your elite status recognized!).

Airbnb is another terrific way to save money on accommodations, especially for longer stays.  Here are some tips on how to negotiate a better Airbnb price, and how to find a safe and comfortable Airbnb.
