Delta Domestic Award Sale January 2018

Link:   Delta Post-Holiday Award Sale

Delta is having an award sale between several US cities, for travel between January 30, 2018, and March 7, 2018!

Here’s what you need to know:

  • You must purchase your tickets by January 9, 2018
  • You must purchase your ticket at least 21 days in advance
  • You must reserve a round-trip flight to get the sale price
  • Maximum stay of 30 days
  • Blackout dates apply

Domestic round-trip flights typically cost 25,000 Delta miles round-trip, though that is most certainly NOT a rule.  Delta canned their award chart a while ago, so there are no fixed prices for any of their award flights.

For example, a round-trip from Atlanta to San Diego can cost as little as 30,000 Delta miles round-trip.  And a short hop from New York to Boston starts at 12,000 miles round-trip.

Because of this, it’s more difficult to decide if a Delta award sale is worth it.  Some advertised sale routes are:

  • Austin to Boston – 20,000 Delta miles round-trip
  • Boston to Indianapolis – 17,000 Delta miles round-trip
  • Boston to Raleigh – 19,000 Delta miles round-trip
  • Los Angeles to Seattle – 13,000 Delta miles round-trip

It’s Possible to Visit Boston for Less With This Delta Sale

As a general rule, if a domestic round-trip flight costs less than 25,000 Delta miles, it’s probably not a bad deal.

Bottom Line

Delta is having an award sale on flights within the continental US.

Sale prices start at 13,000 Delta miles round-trip.  You must purchase your flight by January 9, 2018, for travel between January 30, 2018, and March 7, 2018.

Even if your home airport and destination aren’t on the list of advertised cities, it’s still worth checking the price!

“As a general rule, if a domestic round-trip flight costs less than 25,000 Delta miles, it’s probably not a bad deal.”

This is terrible advice, especially considering this site is aimed at people inexperienced with using miles thinking they’re getting advice from experts. Just because it’s unusual to find Delta awards that low does not necessarily make it a good deal.

For example, one of the published sales is AUS-SEA for 22,000 round trip, which someone following your advice would believe to be “a good deal” and might even transfer valuable membership rewards or other flexible points as you suggest.

This route is widely available during the sale period for $197 with non-stop Alaska flights. Someone spending miles on this “sale” is getting less than a penny of value per mile. You can get far more value from your miles, especially the flexible ones which can be transferred to other airlines with much better redemption rates. Always check cash fares to determine if it’s worth using your miles for a flight.
