Today, June 24, 2015, is the last day to apply for the Southwest Premier card with its increased sign-up bonus of 50,000 Southwest points.
I’ll explain why Southwest points are great to collect. And give you some tips about how to use them!
Limited-Time Bonus on the Southwest Premier Card

Through today, June 24, 2015, the Southwest Premier card has a sign-up bonus of 50,000 Southwest points after you spend $2,000 on purchases in the 1st 3 months of opening your account.
Because Southwest points are worth ~1.25 to ~1.43 cents cents each, the sign-up bonus alone is worth ~$625 to ~$715 (50,000 Southwest points X 1.25 or 1.43 cents per point) in award flights. And even more if you have the Southwest Companion Pass!
Remember, Southwest flies international routes to destinations like the Bahamas, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico.
That said, the 50,000 point offer will likely return. And usually you can find at least 1 version (there are 3) of the Southwest card with a 50,000 point bonus.
But it could be better to apply now, especially if you want the better bonus on the Southwest Premier card.
Should You Get a Southwest Credit Card?
Southwest credit cards are my favorite cards for domestic travel because they are a great way for many folks to have Big Travel with Small Money!
It is easy to use Southwest points because there are no blackout dates, and everyone gets 2 free checked bags on Southwest!
The points from Southwest credit cards count towards the Companion Pass. Here’s how to pick the 2 Southwest cards that are best for you. The sign-up bonus from 2 cards will get you most of the way to the Companion Pass which you’ll qualify for if you earn 110,000 Southwest points in a calendar year.
The Companion Pass is a great deal because your companion flies with you for almost free on paid and award tickets for up to 2 years.
If you are trying to get the Companion Pass, make sure you don’t make these 3 common mistakes!
Southwest started flying to the Caribbean on July 1, 2014, and yes, you can use the Southwest Companion Pass for those flights!
Other Perks of the Southwest Premier Card
Along with the 50,000 points you’ll earn after meeting minimum spending requirements, you’ll also get:
- 2 points per $1 spent on Southwest Airlines, hotel partners, car rental partners, and points purchases
- 6,000 bonus Southwest points on your card year anniversary, worth ~$75 to ~$86 (6,000 Southwest points x 1.25 or 1.43 cents per point)
- The ability to earn A-List elite qualifying points (Tier Qualifying Points)
- NO foreign transaction fees
The $99 annual fee is NOT waived for the 1st year.
And remember, everyone gets 2 free checked bags!
Because the annual bonus of 6,000 Southwest points is worth ~$75 to ~$86, it nearly cancels the cost of the $99 annual fee.
You can earn 50,000 Southwest points on the Southwest Premier card after completing minimum spending requirements if you apply by today, June 24, 2015.
Those 50,000 points are enough for ~$625 to ~$715 (50,000 Southwest points X 1.25 or 1.43 cents per point) in award travel on Southwest!
You’ll also get benefits such as a 6,000 point anniversary bonus, the ability to earn tier qualifying points, and NO foreign transaction fees.
