Lyn writes about how to fly free on Southwest on her GotoTravelGal.com blog, and has written a free ebook that walks you step-by-step through how to earn the coveted Southwest Companion Pass.  If you can earn it, the Southwest Companion Pass lets 1 person fly nearly free with you for up to 2 years!

Lyn:   Did you know there’s a way to earn DOUBLE Southwest points right now?  Southwest, my favorite airline, is offering a rare promotion that lets you earn 2X Southwest points on any flights you pay for with cash or credit card!

But you have to get everything booked and flown by June 13, 2018.

I’ve been studying miles and points since 2015, and I’ve never seen Southwest offer a promotion like this!  While I always try and pay for our flights with points, I did bend and pay for a cheap flight to New York City for myself to take advantage of this offer.

You Can Earn Double Points on Any Southwest Flight Paid With Cash or Credit Card Through June 13, 2018!

Here’s the scoop on Southwest’s National Double Points Promotion!

How to Earn Double Points on Southwest Flights

Southwest’s National Double Points Promotion is offering Rapid Rewards members twice the points they would ordinarily earn on any fare type with Southwest, including Wanna Get Away, Anytime, and Business Select fares.

But, first you need to see if you’ve been targeted.

Sign Into Your Southwest Account to See If You’re Eligible for the Promotion

You can first try checking under the My Account section at Southwest.com.

  1.   Once you’re logged in, click on “Rapid Rewards” at the top right and then “My Account.”
  2.   Scroll down on the left to “Promotions“, click on it and see if you can find the promotion listed.

I’ve also seen it promoted throughout the Southwest site and mobile app, making me think it’s possible for anyone with a Rapid Rewards account to enroll.  Try clicking this link to see if you are able to register.

How the Promotion Works

Based on the type of fare you book, you will earn double the normal Southwest points you would earn from that fare.  Normally you’d earn points on the base fare:

  • 6 Southwest points per $1 for Wanna Get Away Fares
  • 10 Southwest points per $1 for Anytime Fares
  • 12 Southwest points per $1 for Business Select Fares

Southwest will NOT DOUBLE any ADDITIONAL points you may earn for holding a Southwest elite status like A-List or A-List Preferred.

Remember, the Southwest points you’ll get are in addition to miles, points, or cash back you’ll earn for booking your flights with a rewards credit card.  Here’s a list of the best airline credit cards to consider when booking your trip!

How to Sign-Up

To take advantage of the offer, you first need to register for the promotion on the links above BEFORE booking your flight.  Then, you’ll need to book AND complete any flights by June 13, 2018.  Be sure to include your Rapid Rewards number when booking or ensure you are logged into your account first.

I Am Taking Advantage of This Promotion for a Cheap Flight to New York City This Spring

The deal is valid for both round-trip or one-way flights.

Once your flight is complete, your points should be credited within 4 days.

The only downside is that the extra (double) points you earn do NOT qualify for the 110,000 Southwest points you need to earn the Southwest Companion Pass, but the regular points you would earn for paying for a flight DO qualify.

My husband and I have an upcoming trip to Rome where we are going to meet in New York City after I drop our kids off at their grandparents.  We will each fly separately to New York City, which is a cheap flight from both of our departure cities.  We decided to go ahead and pay for these, rather than using our points, and earn the double points.

Bottom Line: Earn Double Points on Paid Southwest Flights Through June 13, 2018

Be sure to check this link to see if you can register to earn double points on all Southwest fares through June 13, 2018.

After you register, all flights need to be booked and completed by June 13, 2018, and then you should see the extra points show up in your Rapid Rewards account within 4 days.

Anyone else going to take advantage?

The way I read the T&C, one does not need to register prior to booking. They simply need to register prior to commencement of travel, while following the specified time frames.
