UPDATE: The Chase Sapphire Preferred no longer earns 3X points on the 1st Friday of the month.
Your Chase Sapphire Preferred card earns 1 more point per dollar today.
On the 1st Friday of every month, pay at restaurants (and many bars) with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card to get 3X Chase Ultimate Rewards points. Normally you get 2X points for dining.
I personally wouldn’t go out of my way to eat out on a Friday just for the 1 extra Ultimate Rewards point. But I’d use my Sapphire Preferred card if I already had a meal planned for today!
How You Can Earn Even More Points
Sign-up for a free account with Rewards Network. Enter your Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card information and you’ll automatically get points when you use your card at 1 of their ~10,000 participating restaurants, bars, and nightclubs.
You can earn points or miles with many airlines including:
- American Airlines
- Delta Airlines
- Hilton Hotels
- IHG Rewards
- Southwest Airlines
- United Airlines
You can earn up to 5 points per $1 spent. So a $100 meal would get you at most 500 points.
Earning points through the Rewards Network also keeps your airline and hotel accounts active. Some programs delete all your points if you don’t use them! For instance, American Airlines miles expire if you don’t add or use points at least once every 18 months.
You can read in more detail about how to earn miles by eating at restaurants.
How Many Points Can You Earn?
Let’s say you want to earn Southwest points. So on the 1st Friday of the month you use your Chase Sapphire Preferred card to pay for a $60 meal at a Rewards Network restaurant.
Here’s how many points you’d get:
- 180 Ultimate Rewards points (3X points for 1st Friday x $60 restaurant bill)
- 300 Southwest points (5X points for Rewards Network x $60 restaurant bill)
Your Chase Sapphire Preferred card allows you to transfer those 180 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Southwest at a 1:1 ratio.
So you could earn a total of:
- ~480 Southwest points (~192 points from Chase Sapphire Preferred + 300 points from Rewards Network)
Save at More Than Just Restaurants
Chase has the final say on what counts as a “restaurant” purchase. However, many bars, pubs, and nightclubs also serve food and are counted as dining establishments. In my experience, many of these also earn the 3X dining points, even if you only order drinks.
Buying Gift Cards at Restaurants
If you want to plan ahead, you can buy restaurant gift cards directly from the restaurant to use later.
Note: Buying restaurant gift cards from a supermarket with your Chase Sapphire Preferred does NOT count.
Amazon has gift cards to chain restaurants such as The Cheesecake Factory, Applebee’s, and Chili’s.
Then you can transfer those points from the Freedom to the Chase Sapphire Preferred and on to partner airlines and hotels.
Will You Still Get 3X Points Outside the US?
Yes. Use your Chase Sapphire Preferred in foreign countries to get 2X points on dining every day and 3X points on the 1st Friday of the month. The Chase Sapphire Preferred does NOT charge foreign transaction fees.
If you dine out or drink at a bar (that also serves food), use your Chase Sapphire Preferred card to earn 3X Chase Ultimate Rewards points.
Register your card for free with Rewards Network to earn more points at participating restaurants, bars, and nightclubs.
This deal won’t change my dining habits. But if I already have plans to dine out on the 1st Friday of the month, I’ll use my Chase Sapphire Preferred card.
