I recently had the pleasure to go to Granada, Spain, for a family vacation. I’ve been to Barcelona, Madrid, Toledo, and a few other small towns in Spain, but Granada ranks as one of my favorites. I liked it even better than Madrid, and it has a bohemian charm that Barcelona doesn’t quite have.
Granada is a feast for the senses. There is so much to see, amazing food to eat, and original music to hear. Here are my top reasons on why I loved Granada. And why you should consider a trip there using travel credit cards to get big discounts!
1. Beautiful Location
Granada is nestled amongst trees and mountains. It’s a wonderful place to explore, and if you visit the San Nicolás viewpoint, you’ll be greeted with amazing views!
Sacromonte is the music epicenter of Granada, and you’ll find many restaurants, bars, and art shops. It has the best views of the city!
2. Unique Architecture
I’m a huge fan of architecture, and Granada had no shortage of unique places to see. At the top of the list is the Alhambra, which was built in 889. It’s a former palace and fortress that you can now tour. Also, there are lots of beautiful gardens surrounding the Alhambra that you can spend all day hiking.
Even if you don’t visit the Alhambra, there is a lot of amazing architecture to be found just by strolling around the city.
3. Delicious Food
Spain is known for their tapas, paella, and sangria. We took a paella cooking class and learned how to make paella and sangria from scratch. But there is much more than that!
Lots of high quality restaurants can be found in the city. One of our favorites was Sur de Granada, which serves food supplied from local farmers and wine from local producers. We also frequented Elvira 81 almost every day. Their crepes are unforgettable!
4. Extraordinary Music
Some consider Granada the birthplace of original flamenco, and we saw 2 shows during our stay. One performance was at the San Nicholás viewpoint.
The energy and passion conveyed in this music is unlike many live performances I have seen.
The second flamenco show we saw was held in an old cave, which further contributed to the electric atmosphere. We ordered tapas and enjoyed sharing a bottle of wine together.
Seeing flamenco was one of the highlights of this trip and is part of what makes Granada special!
5. Bohemian Culture
Granada has a relaxed, artsy, friendly vibe to it. There are some excellent coffee shops that celebrate the best things in life: Community, food, and art! La Qarmita was my favorite.
Even the restaurants embrace art to another level, like Saint Germain.
Granada has become one of my favorite destinations because of its beautiful location, unique architecture, delicious food, incredible music, and its bohemian, laid back culture! You can fly to Spain using miles instead of money with one of our picks for best travel credit card.
