If You Spend Lots at US Gas Stations, You’ll Appreciate These Latest Bonus Categories

Chase Freedom Rotating Categories July Through September 2018

1.   Gas Stations

This is an excellent opportunity to earn extra Chase Ultimate Rewards points!  Because lots of folks spend plenty of money on fuel.  Plus, gas stations usually sell more than just gas.  Some offer groceries, fast food, toiletries, and more!

2.   Lyft

This category isn’t super exciting.  Lyft credit card transactions code as a travel purchase, so you’ll already get bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards points when you use a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred (2 points per $1) or Chase Sapphire Reserve (3 points per $1 on travel; excluding $300 travel credit).  I’d rather use my Chase Freedom for other purchases that do NOT already earn bonus points.

3.   Walgreens

Walgreens sells plenty of things you’d normally buy at the grocery store.  With a little strategy, you should be able to do a fair percentage of your weekly shopping at Walgreens.

If you spend the maximum $1,500 in bonus categories, you’ll earn 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points.  That’s worth $75 in cash back!

And remember, Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be even more valuable if you have cards like the Chase Sapphire PreferredChase Sapphire Reserve, or Ink Business Preferred.  When you have one of these cards, you can combine your points and transfer them to lots of great airline and hotel partners!

Note:   Tomorrow, June 14, 2018, is the last day to activate the current Chase Freedom 5X bonus categories (grocery stores, PayPal, and Chase Pay).  If you activate now, you’ll earn the bonus on eligible spending retroactively for the whole quarter.

And registering for next quarter’s bonus will NOT deactivate the current bonus categories for this quarter.

Bottom Line

Starting Friday, June 15, 2018, you’ll be able to activate the bonus categories on the Chase Freedom for the third quarter of 2018.  They are:

  • Gas stations
  • Lyft
  • Walgreens

Because folks spend a lot on gas, and Walgreens sells plenty of groceries, you should be able to earn 5% cash back (or 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points) on the full $1,500 in combined spending.

Win some, lose some. The Q2 bonuses, especially grocery stores and PayPal were awesome! I have nearly maxed out the promotion. However, this one is much more underwhelming. I won’t spend anywhere near $1,500 on gas in three months (thank goodness!), I rarely go to Walgreens and I don’t use ride-share services. Here’s hoping Q4 is more lucrative!

Not too excited about these next quarter’s bonus categories. Changes happening with my Citi AAvantage Miles cards are now very competitive with the Chase Freedom. And that includes permanent changes for the Citi card…not just for the next three months.

Nice to see no duplication of DISCOVER which will feature restaurants.
