Here’s an interesting deal that your eyes may glaze over at first!
If you collect Citi ThankYou points with cards like the Citi Premier℠ Card, you earn flexible points that can be transferred to partner airlines and hotels. And if you do your research (or just sign-up for our newsletter), you’ll know how to use them for Big Travel.
Until December 12, 2018, you’ll receive 25% bonus points when you transfer Citi ThankYou points to Avianca. Normally, points transfer at a ratio of 1:1, so with this bonus you’ll receive 5 Avianca miles for every 4 Citi ThankYou points you transfer.
This is handy, because Avianca has TONS of airline partners. So you can book a ticket through Avianca for flights on United Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS, etc., to go just about anywhere. And the prices can be pretty spectacular!
For example, you can reserve flights between Newark and Washington, DC, for just 7,500 miles one-way in coach. That means with this current transfer bonus, you’d only spend 6,000 Citi ThankYou points (6,000 points + 25% transfer bonus = 7,500 Avianca miles)!
This transfer bonus allows you to fly one-way from Chicago to Paris in coach for just 24,000 Citi ThankYou points. Or one-way from the US to Istanbul in Business Class on Turkish Airlines for 51,000 Citi ThankYou points!
You can even reserve a one-way First Class transatlantic flight on Lufthansa for 70,000 Citi ThankYou points with this deal. That same ticket easily costs $7,000+. So you’d get ~10 cents per point by using them this way!
It’s not difficult to find available seats on these routes (though First Class seats are sparse). So you should have no problem spending your Avianca miles.
And here’s the best part: Avianca does NOT pass along costly fuel surcharges like many other airlines. It also has no close-in booking fees, so you can book last-minute tickets without consequence.
Because of this, you’ll have barely any out of pocket expense when booking an Avianca award flight. Just note that you’ll be charged a $25 booking fee.
The biggest reason I would hesitate about transferring my points to Avianca is that you can buy them for SO cheap! Avianca has had plenty of sales where you’ll receive up to a 150% bonus on purchased points. The last sale allowed you to purchase Avianca miles for as little as 1.375 cents each.
