INSIDER SECRET: Even though Citi is gutting its travel protections there are plenty of other cards that offer baggage delay protection, trip interruption coverage and primary rental car insurance, so use one of these travel insurance credit cards to ensure you’re covered in a worst-case scenario from now on.
For any purchases made with most Citi cards after Sept. 22, 2019, Citi is removing a wide swath of benefits. Almost all of the perks being discontinued are readily available in some form with other travel rewards credit cards, so it’s shocking to see Citi take an ax to so many benefits at once.
One of the biggest hits is the end of Citi® Price Rewind, which was an easy way to put money back in your pocket. From here on out I’ll be using my Chase Sapphire Reserve® for most of my travel purchases because it offers primary collision insurance on rental cars and excellent trip delay coverage, and I’ll earn 3x Chase Ultimate Rewards points on my travel expenses.
Citi credit cards losing perks
If you log into your Citi card benefits page you should get a pop-up detailing the benefits your card is losing. This is the message I got for the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card and the Citi Rewards+® Card:
These changes are affecting most Citi cards, but the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi or Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Card by Citi are retaining most of these coverages and perks.
If your Citi card isn’t a Costco card and has any of the following benefits, they’ll be going away on Sept. 22, 2019:
- Worldwide car rental insurance
- Trip cancellation and interruption protection
- Worldwide travel accident insurance
- Citi® Price Rewind
- Trip delay protection
- Baggage delay protection
- Lost baggage protection
- 90-day return protection
- Roadside assistance dispatch service
- Travel and emergency assistance
Your coverages will still apply to any purchases made before Sept. 22, 2019, so you’ll be able to file claims after that date, but the roadside dispatch and travel and emergency assistance won’t be available after Sept. 22.
These perks are even being removed from the Citi Prestige® Card, which is also losing medical evacuation and missed-event ticket protection. And, according to The Points Guy, the Citi Dividend and Citi® Double Cash Card will be losing extended warranty and damage and theft purchase protection. The information for the Citi Double Cash Card has been collected independently by Million Mile Secrets. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
If you’re looking for a card that will have travel coverages or rental car insurance beyond Sept. 22, 2019, check out these guides:
Keep in mind that many of the Citi cards listed in the above guides will likely be losing those perks this fall.
