INSIDER SECRET: When flights to Hawaii are this cheap it can make sense to pay for the airfare with points because you’ll be able to earn frequent flyer miles on your free flight.
Right now there are cheap flights to Hawaii for as little as ~$290 round-trip in coach. And there are lots of other good deals from all over the US in the $400s and $500s.
Cheap Flights to Hawaii
These cheap fares are mainly available from West Coast cities, but there are deals in the $400s and $500s from the Mid-West and East Coast as well. It’s worth searching your home airport and travel dates to see if you can find a discounted fare that fits your travel plans.
For example, there are round-trip coach flights from:
- Albuquerque to Kahului for $355
- Houston to Honolulu from $450
- Oakland to Honolulu from $318
- Denver to Honolulu or Kahului from $403
- Las Vegas to Honolulu or Kahului for $355
- San Diego to Kona from $290
- San Francisco to Honolulu from $298
- San Jose, California to Kahului, Kona or Honolulu from $295
- and more!
Be sure to check out our posts on how to use Google Flights to find sale dates. Then book directly on the airlines’ website, or through a site like Orbitz or Expedia.
With prices as low as this, it can make sense to pay with points for your flights to Hawaii. You could end up paying fewer points compared to booking an award ticket. You’ll even earn frequent flyer miles while you’re at it.
For example, if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve, you can pay for airfare through the Chase travel portal for 1.5 cents per point. The problem with this strategy is that you’ll have to be able to find the cheapest flights in the Chase travel portal, and for this sale I couldn’t find the lowest price in the Chase travel portal.
So you could use your U.S. Bank Altitude™ Reserve Visa Infinite® Card, your points are worth the same 1.5 cents per point when you book airfare through the US Bank travel center or use US Bank’s Real-Time Rewards. And with Real-Time Rewards you just purchase the flight and you’ll get a text asking if you want to redeem points for the purchase
You could also make the purchase with your Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card and then use Capital One miles to “erase” the charge.
