INSIDER SECRET: The fees on most Virgin Atlantic award flights are outrageous, but Virgin Atlantic miles are great to use for booking certain partner flights.

Currently, both Amex Membership Rewards and Citi ThankYou have 30% transfer bonuses for Virgin Atlantic. This is an excellent opportunity to book business-class tickets to places like Europe and Japan for much less than the usual price.

This includes cheap flights to Europe starting at 39,000 points one-way in business class.

Cheap Flights to Europe With Easy-to-Earn Miles

Virgin Atlantic miles are incredibly easy to earn because they transfer from all of the following points programs:

You’ll receive a 30% bonus on Amex Membership Rewards points transferred to Virgin Atlantic through July 1, 2019. Also, through June 22, 2019, you’ll get a 30% bonus on Citi ThankYou points transfers to Virgin Atlantic. So, for both programs, 1,000 points will convert to 1,300 Virgin Atlantic miles.

If you need more points, check out this guide on how to earn Citi ThankYou points or this one on how to earn Amex points.

In most cases, it doesn’t make sense to book Virgin Atlantic miles for award flights on Virgin Atlantic planes because they add fuel surcharges and the fees are ridiculous. For example, you can fly from the Northeastern US to London for only 20,000 Virgin Atlantic miles round-trip during the off-peak season.

That means you only have to transfer 16,000 Amex or ThankYou points during the promotion. The problem is that you’ll easily pay $460+ in taxes and fees and it’s not unheard of to find economy flights to Europe for close to that price.

Virgin Atlantic miles are excellent for booking with certain partner airlines, like Delta and ANA. With Virgin Atlantic miles, you book Delta flights to Europe for only 50,000 miles one-way in business class, so you only need to transfer 39,000 points with the current bonuses.

The deal is even sweeter if you want to fly ANA to Asia. You can book round-trip business-class awards on ANA from the US to Japan for 90,000-95,000 miles. Once you consider the transfer bonus, you only need 70,000 to 74,000 Amex or ThankYou points to book these awards. Taxes and fees for these award flights are only ~$270 per person.

Are you planning to take advantage of either of these transfer bonuses? If so, what awards are you booking?

Thank you for a great article.

Are the Transfers of points immediate?

Or how long is the wait wait for them to show up in your Virgin Atlantic account?
