Just a quick update that the minimum spending on the Chase Sapphire Preferred which offers a 40,000 Ultimate Rewards point sign-up bonus is increasing back to $3,000 for 1 to 2 weeks from the current $2,000 by 2:00 or 3:00 pm EST today.

I suspect this may be because the public offer on the Chase website is still for $3,000 minimum spending and Chase wants to align the offers.

I wouldn’t go out of my way to apply for the card now, since the $2,000 minimum spending should be back in 1 to 2 weeks (or so I’m told).  But I would send that secure message to Chase ASAP and ask to get matched to the lower spending requirement if you applied for the Chase Sapphire Preferred within the last 93 days.

@drunken boat:

I don’t follow your logic. If Chase can’t make money from people who follow travel blogs, why would only lower spending requirements for blogger affiliate links? And if we churners won’t receive targetted offers from Chase, how is missing the 2k app a “blessing in disguise?”

Some wild guesses CSP min spending requirement flunctuation –

1. Chase wants to identify those opportunistic customers who apply cards for easy bonus points (aka churners), who are unlikely to be profitable for the bank. At the same time, Chase don’t want to mix the churner segment with legitimate big spenders who tend to stick with a card. Otherwise, Chase will chase away profitability

2. But who are these intelligent churners?

3. Well, how about those who hang out on flyertalk or the travel credit card blogs daily? They seems to be pretty smart, and bank keeps hemorrhaging reward points to them, right? It is king of interesting that while the min. spending requirement were lowered to $2000 through blogger’s affiliated links, it was still $3000 on the official Chase website. Unlike Citi, Chase is not inconsistent, Chase is pretty shrewd too.

4. If my hypothesis is right, missing the reduced spending CSP application may be a blessing in disguise. I doubt Chase is going to send target offers (such as 70K CSP or 80K Ink Bold) to the those that Chase has identified as “clever customers whom we can’t make profits from”

Please comment if your experience disprove my hypothesis.

2.5 weeks, still nothing about the spend being lowered to $2k 🙁

@mulbry Sorry, they didn’t say which offer they were using…

@Tommy Glad it worked for you!

Ok finally I got the extra 10k points.
1st request for the 70k match, it was a no go due to it was a targeted offer
2nd requested for the 50k match that most current card offer like united. No go too. Noted these was a shout down by regular CSR
3rd time request told them you can even match 10k point then I rather use the other offer card with a higher points. Regular CSR then sent my message to a senior CSR. A few days later I got my 10k point ready to use.

So mainly try to request them to tranfer to a senior CSR, try seem to have more power. GL thc again @celeste
