INSIDER SECRET: If you add the Chase Ultimate Rewards points you earn with the Chase Freedom® onto a Chase Sapphire Reserve®, each point is worth 1.5 cents toward travel booked through the Chase travel portal. So you’re effectively earning 7.5% back in travel rewards for your bonus-category spending.

The Chase Freedom® 5x categories for the fourth quarter of 2019 are officially out. From Oct. 1 through Dec. 30, 2019, you’ll get 5% cash back (5x Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1 you spend) at department stores, PayPal and Chase Pay with your Chase Freedom. If you spend the $1,500 maximum in bonus categories, you’ll earn 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($75).

Just remember, you have to register your card to get this bonus. Registration opened yesterday, Sept. 15, 2019, and you’ll need to activate your card by December 14, 2019.

Chase Freedom bonus categories

Chase Freedom’s quarterly bonus categories are a terrific way to earn valuable Chase Ultimate Rewards points. That’s one of the reasons MMS writers keep the Freedom card in their wallet.

By activating your Chase Freedom now, you’ll earn 5% cash back (5x Chase Ultimate Rewards points) at department stores, PayPal and Chase Pay from Oct. 1 to Dec. 30, 2019, on up to $1,500 in combined spending.

It’s nice that department stores are included for Q4 — it is the holiday shopping season, after all. Chase Pay could also be a lucrative category for a variety of purchases as more and more stores are starting to accept this type of contactless payment.

When it comes to earning bonus points at department stores, be sure to check the list of which stores are eligible because Chase has some exclusions.

And don’t forget, you can pool the points you earn with your Freedom card with a Chase Sapphire Preferred® CardInk Business Preferred℠ Credit Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve® card and transfer them to airlines and hotels. If you make the most of your spending every quarter, you can earn $300 per year (30,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points) in bonus-category spending alone (four quarters X $75 per quarter).

If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve you could pool your points on that card which are then worth 1.5 cents each toward travel booked through the Chase Travel Portal. So that extra $300 in cash back each year could be used to pay for $450 in flights, rental cars or hotels.

Does Chase Pay work with Costco Auto Department or Sears Auto Service Department?

Used my $10 credit (that I earned from Best Buy when spending the $200 to get 1250 points when I used the CFU) on another gift card and paid using Chase Pay.

I’m looking to spend about $500 on Disney tickets and trying to earn 5% with my Freedom. I wasn’t able to use my credit card to buy a gift card at walgreens this quarter and couldn’t find Disney gift cards at any gas stations. Does anyone have any ideas where I could still find the bonus for this quarter, or any ideas for next quarter where I could use Chase Pay to buy gc?

Sam’s sells Disney cards at a slight discount and is part of the bonus. Download the dosh app to get another 2-5% back on Sam’s purchases.

You can get the bonus at Walmart and Walmart.com. Get the walmart app and sign up for Walmart Pay. Use Chase Pay as your default method of payment for Walmart Pay and then use Walmart Pay in the store using the Walmart app and selecting Walmart Pay, then scan the QR code at the register and it gets charged to your Chase Pay. Make sure the Freedom card is your default for Chase Pay. Walmart.com directly supports Chase Pay at checkout. Just log into your Chase Pay account. I maxed out three quarters using this trick.

Help please. I couldn’t find a way to add Chase Pay, as a default method of payment for Walmart Pay. The only option I found was to add a specific credit card.

Thanks in advance.

You have to scroll down. You won’t see it. It says “Add Payment Method”. Choose Chase Pay. It will take you to a window that looks like Chase.com and you log in. It will use the default card. I made the Chase Freedom card the default in the Chase Pay app. If you had the app on before. Uninstall it and download a new copy from the App Store or Play Store. Log back in and set up your Walmart Pay again. Good Luck.

Rather just stick with Walmart.com

@Ravi….Just did that exact Walmart Chase Pay you described today.

Since Chase Pay is now integrated with Samsung Pay, does that mean using my Freedom through a Samsung Pay linked Chase Pay card will qualify for this quarter bonus?

Good question Ben. I’m not sure if that would work.

It’s still pretty early so we may need to wait a few weeks to get some hard data points from others.
