Just a quick post to let folks know that longhorn11 found a link to the Chase British Airways 100,000 Avios points card in this FlyerTalk post.

Chase is really, really making it hard to keep up with these offers!

I suspect that more cards will have such tiered spending requirements to get the full sign – up bonus.  Why give large sign-on bonuses away easily, when you can make the consumer work for it?

So spending $20,000 within the 1st 12 months or $1,667 per month gets you the extra 50,000 points, plus 25,000 points for the base spending ($20,000 X 1.25 miles per $1 spent).

  • You will get 50,000 bonus Avios points after your first use of the card
  • 25,000 bonus Avios points after you make $10,000 in purchases within the first year of account opening
  • Plus an additional 25,000 bonus Avios points after you make an additional $10,000 in purchases also within the first year of account opening

The first year fee is $95.  So you’re essentially getting at least 50,000 British Airways Avios points for $95.

Interestingly, Chase has learned from their debacle last year, where high fuel surcharges on British Airways award flights  annoyed customers.  Here’s what they say in the offer.

Did you know that for just 80,000 Avios and approximately $1100 in taxes, fees and surcharges, you can fly roundtrip in business class from New York to London? Compare an award ticket to the cost of a business class ticket and see how much you will save with the British Airways Visa Signature card.

It is nice of them to acknowledge in the terms of the offer that you’ll pay fuel surcharges on your award ticket (unless redeemed for flights on American Airlines or Alaska Airlines within the Americas, on LAN, or for flights departing from Brazil)

And here’s what the terms say:

Reward Flights

At time of publication all reward flights and travel together tickets are subject to fuel surcharges, taxes & fees of approximately $650 per person in economy or $1,100 in business class based on travel from New York to London.

It has been a very busy week for me at work, so I won’t go into more detail now (more coming up later), but this is a better deal on the British Airways card than the usual 50,000 Avios points.

Personally, I quite like the new British Airways Avios points.  They are great for short distance flights.   And I’ll pay the $800 in fuel surcharges to fly in Business or First Class to Europe on a British Airways flight.  Yes, it is not ideal, but I’m still traveling for much less than the price of a coach ticket.

Check out my British Airways First Class trip report with Emily!

And British Airways has terrific award availability to Europe.  Check my post on using American Airline miles to see just how many US cities are served by British Airways.

However, you can also use British Airways Avios points to get to South America on American Airlines or LAN without fuel surcharges or for travel within the US on American Airlines or Alaska Airlines (preferably on short flights because British Airways has a distance based chart).

I’ve written a post on how to search for British Airways awards as part of my “Redeem American Airlines Miles Like a Pro Series” and the next series was going to be on using the British Airways Avios program!

Stay tuned for more British Airways posts soon, and my detailed review of this card.  It is a good offer and I do recommend collecting points in different programs for added flexibility.  I’d much rather get  a separate credit card offering a sign up bonus of Avios points than transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Avios.

Stay tuned for more detailed posts on this offer and on the British Airways program.  Now, I’ve got to go explain to Emily why 10 minutes turned into 1+ hour in front of the computer. 🙂
