The new iPhone 6 is available September 19, 2014 (this Friday!).
Here’s how to get the most miles, points, or cash back for your purchase!
Earn Points When You Buy iPhone 6
The number of points you can earn when you buy the new iPhone 6 depends on where you shop and which credit card you use.
Many stores are offering ~$100 to ~$300 in credits when you trade in your old iPhone. So
this could also impact your decision.
Unfortunately, the iPhone 6 is excluded from most shopping portals. But this could change in a few months.
In the meantime, you can still earn bonus points when you use certain cards. Here’s a look at some of your options:
I love earning Chase Ultimate Rewards points because they can be transferred to airline partners…
|Chase Ultimate Rewards Airline Transfer Partners|
|Aer Lingus||British Airways||Flying Blue (Air France/KLM)|
|Southwest||United Airlines||Virgin Atlantic|
|Chase Ultimate Rewards Hotel Transfer Partners|
The Chase Ink Bold and Chase Ink Plus also offer purchase protection on items you buy with your card. This covers damage and theft for 120 days after your purchase. Check your Benefits Guide for full details.
2. Apple Store
Some folks prefer to purchase their iPhone directly from the Apple store. But you won’t earn the most points there.
You can earn 2X American Express Membership Rewards points at the Apple Store, if you pay with the AMEX Business Gold Rewards card.
You can also transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points to airline partners…
|American Express Membership Rewards Airline Transfer Partners|
|ANA||Asia Miles||British Airways|
|Etihad||Flying Blue (Air France / KLM)||Hawaiian Airlines|
|American Express Membership Rewards Hotel Transfer Partners|
However, with both the purchase protection and the extended warranty, AMEX will only cover you for the amount charged to your card. When you sign-up for a new contract your phone can cost just $199. If the phone breaks and has to be replaced, a new iPhone 6 will cost you $650 with no contract. So you won’t have enough to buy a new phone.
3. Wireless Carriers
Cards that earn bonus points when you shop at cellphone providers:
- Chase Ink Bold & Chase Ink Plus – 5X points at cellphone providers. This is typically only for wireless service, NOT phones and accessories. But in the past some folks have been able to get 5X points on new phones.
There are some great shopping portal deals for new customers. So if you’re switching wireless carriers, you can earn ~2,000 to ~3,000 points!
Get Cash Back When You Buy the iPhone 6
If you prefer to earn cash back, here are some of your best options:
1. American Express SimplyCash
You can earn 5% cash back on the iPhone 6 at Staples when you pay with the AMEX SimplyCash Card.
Let’s say you buy the mid-range 64gb iPhone 6 with a 2 year contract for ~$300. If you use the AMEX SimplyCash Card. you will get ~$15 in cash back ($300 for phone x 5% cash back).
I prefer to earn 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points at Staples with my Chase Ink Bold card. That’s because 1,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be worth more than $15.
2. Discover It
The Discover It card is a great option. That’s because you can earn 5% cash back if you buy your new phone online October through December.
You will only earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in spending. This is important to keep in mind if you plan on buying multiple phones, accessories, protection plans, etc.
3. Other Cash Back Cards
If you don’t have a Discover It card, you can also earn cash back when you buy the iPhone with cards like:
- Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite Mastercard – up to 2.1% cash back when you redeem for travel
- AMEX Everyday Preferred – up to 1.5% cash back when you make 30 purchases per month, plus an extended warranty.
- Citi Double Cash Card – 1% cash back on your purchase and another 1% cash back when you pay your bill
And you may be able sweeten the deal by combining cash back with store discounts, if you can order online.
iPhone 6 Deals & Discounts
Here’s a list of stores that are offering savings and incentives when you buy the iPhone 6:
1. Sam’s Club
Sam’s Club will have the cheapest price on the new iPhone 6. The price starts at $177 with a 2 year contract, which is $22 less than you can find at Staples or the Apple store.
And with the Discover It card you will save another ~$9 (~$177 iPhone 6 x 5% cash back) if you buy it online.
At Walmart the iPhone 6 starts at $179 with a 2 year contract. This is a $20 discount.
The Discover It card will save you another ~$9 (~$179 iPhone 6 x 5% cash back) when you purchase it through walmart.com.
At RadioShack you will get a free $50 iTunes gift card when you buy an iPhone 6 starting at $199. This might be a good deal if you buy a lot of movies, music, or apps.
This deal expires September 27, 2014. So you can NOT combine this offer with the Discover It 5% cash back.
The new iPhone 6 is available in stores on September 19, 2014 (this Friday!).
There are many ways credit cards can help you earn Big Travel and save money when you buy the iPhone 6.
You might consider using the Chase Ink Plus or Ink Bold to earn 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points at Staples. That’s because you can use your Chase Ultimate Rewards points for a statement credit OR transfer them to partner airlines & hotels such as United Airlines and Hyatt.
But the best deal for you depends on which stores are in your area and what’s more valuable to you: points, cash back, or instant savings.
If you plan on buying the new iPhone, how will you get the most out of your purchase?
