INSIDER SECRET: Even though awards with Hawaiian Airlines are changing you can still book great deals with other miles and points, like 25,000 miles (or less) from the West Coast to Hawaii. So take a look at our guide for award flights to Hawaii before you book your next dream vacation.
On the heels of United Airlines announcing that they are dropping their award chart this fall, Hawaiian Airlines has made a similar move without any advanced notice. It’s not surprising to see another airline move to dynamic pricing for award flights, but it is disappointing that we weren’t given any heads up.
To be fair, this isn’t exactly dynamic award pricing because there is still an award chart with defined minimum and maximum costs. But in practice, it won’t be much different than what United and Delta have in place.
Best Way to Get to Hawaii
Hawaiian Airlines has implemented a new award structure, you can see the new prices below:
And here is what the award chart used to be:
There are some huge jumps to the high-end of these prices. And even though most of the lowest prices have remained the same the real question is: How many awards will be available at the lowest levels?
One of the biggest changes to the award charts is that there is now a different award zone for flights to Hawaii from the East Coast. Under the old award chart, you could fly from New York to Honolulu for 20,000-60,000 miles one-way, now it’ll set you back 30,000-130,000 miles for the same flight!
If you have Hawaiian Airlines elite status or a Hawaiian Airline credit card, you’ll still have access to a discounted award chart. But even the discounted prices aren’t very good.
Personally, I’ve never used Hawaiian Airlines miles to fly to Hawaii. I have flown on Hawaii Airlines from Honolulu to Auckland, but I booked the flights with United Airlines miles.
If you have been collecting Hawaiian Airlines miles hopefully you can find available awards at the lowest prices and use them. But if not, you’ve still got a handful of cheap options for using miles & points to get to Hawaii.
