I’ve done a few credit card makeovers for family & friends. I take an inventory of their current credit cards, assess their travel goals, and ask about their credit score. Then, I recommend the best credit cards that fit those key elements.
Chase credit cards are among my favorites because it’s extremely easy to use Chase Ultimate Rewards points. I’ve booked travel through their portal, but also transferred them to a few of their excellent transfer partners like Southwest, United Airlines, and Hyatt. Here are the top 4 credit cards I’ve been recommending:
- Capital One® Secured Mastercard® – Best for people who are re-building their credit
- Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card – Best Chase credit card for beginners to miles and points
- Chase Sapphire Reserve® – Best Chase credit card for frequent travelers
- Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card – Best Chase credit card for small business owners
The Best Credit Card for Building Credit
For someone who is building their credit and whose credit score isn’t yet 700, I’ve recommended the Capital One® Secured Mastercard®. My friend got approved for this credit card, put a small recurring charge on it, set it to autopay, and will check his credit score again in ~6 months. It’s been ~4 to 6 weeks, but he is already getting targeted ads for other credit card offers on his phone and laptop!
The Best Credit Card for Beginners
For someone who has a credit score of at least ~720 and who is just getting into the miles & points hobby, I recommend the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. My mom recently applied and got approved for this credit card, even though she was denied at first. This credit card will help establish a positive relationship with Chase so that she can get approved for more of the best travel credit cards in the future! I had this Chase credit card when I first got into the miles and points hobby.
The Best Credit Card for Frequent Travelers
For people who travel frequently and have high credit scores, I recommend the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. That’s because it comes with so many travel perks, like a Global Entry/TSA PreCheck application credit, Priority Pass access, and 3X points per $1 spent on travel and dining.
A frequent traveler who has more experience with miles & points will know how to use all the benefits to extract all of the value, making it worth the annual fee. I have the Chase Sapphire Reserve® credit card, and it stays in the front of my wallet all the time!
The Best Credit Card for Small Business Owners
For small business owners, the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card is the best credit card.
I recommended it to my friend who runs a home rental business. It’s hard to pass up the 80,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards welcome bonus after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.
The Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card also has 3X points per $1 on the first $150,000 spent in select categories each anniversary year. I also have the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card and use it every month!
