The long wait is over and the Citi Prestige is open for applications again.
If you’re approved for the card you can earn 50,000 Citi ThankYou points after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. This is a solid offer, but I’m not blown away.
But Citi Prestige has been revamped, so let’s take a quick look at what you’ll be getting with the new card.
The New Citi Prestige Card
With this updated version of the Citi Prestige card you’ll get improved spending bonus of:
- 5X Citi ThankYou points on air travel and dining purchases
- 3X Citi ThankYou points on cruise line and hotel purchases
- 1 Citi ThankYou point on all other purchases
The Citi Prestige card’s airline credit has been changed to a $250 travel credit, so a wider range of purchases will trigger it, which is a big plus. And the card will have cell phone insurance starting in May 2019.
You’ll still get Priority Pass lounge access with the card and a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fee reimbursement once every 5 years.
But later this year some of the card’s most valuable perks are taking a hit. First off, the card’s annual fee has increased to $495. This higher annual fee will apply to existing cardholders beginning on September 1, 2019.
After that date, you will only be able to use the 4th night free benefit twice per year. Before there was no limit. But until then there is no limit on how many times you can use the perk. Also previously, you could book the 4th night free benefit through the Citi Concierge, which allowed you to still earn elite night credit and hotel points. Now that option is going away and with it the ability to take advantage of a hotel loyalty program and the 4th night free benefit at the same time.
Currently, if you have the Citi Prestige your Citi ThankYou points are worth 25% more (1.25 cents each) when you use them to pay for airfare through the Citi ThankYou travel site. But on September 1, 2019, that bonus will disappear and they will only be worth 1 cent each.
Keep in mind that Citi’s application restrictions for the card:
Bonus ThankYou Points are not available if you received a new cardmember bonus for Citi Rewards+℠, Citi ThankYou® Preferred, Citi ThankYou® Premier/Citi Premier℠ or Citi Prestige®, or if you have closed any of these cards, in the past 24 months.
I already have the Citi Premier℠ Card and I was looking forward to seeing what the bonus would be for the Citi Prestige. In the past I remember the card having a 70,000 point bonus. But at times it also didn’t have a sign-up bonus at all, so this isn’t the worst case scenario and it will provide a lot of value for lots of folks.
What do you think? Is it enough to get you to pull the trigger on the card?
