Amtrak has launched a sale offering up to 30% off fares purchased from January 28 through January 30, 2020. The sale is inspired by “National Plan Your Vacation Day” which encourages Americans to use all of their paid time off. According to research from the U.S. Travel Association, Americans had 768 million days of unused PTO last year.
You’ll see the discounts for travel on trains like the: Northeast Regional, Acela, Downeaster, Carolinian, Piedmont, Keystone, Pennsylvanian, Vermonter, Maple Leaf, Empire Service, Adirondack and Ethan Allen.
To take advantage of the sale, you’ll need to book a train for travel February 16 through May 31, 2020. Note that you can save even more when booking a Share Fare or a Kids Fare.

Best credit cards for train travel
You’ll want to pay with a credit card that earns bonus points on travel purchases. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Ink Business Preferred Credit Card both earn 3x Chase Ultimate Rewards points on all travel purchases, while the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns 2x points. The Citi Premier Card and US Bank Altitude Reserve card are also good options, each earning 3x points on travel purchases.
Or you can use the Bank of America Amtrak Guest Rewards® World Mastercard®, which earns 3x Amtrak points on Amtrak purchases.
