The sign-up bonus on the Hilton Honors Surpass Card from American Express has increased to 75,000 Hilton points from the usual 60,000 points bonus.

Up to February 28, 2014, you can get 75,000 points from the American Express Hilton Surpass card after spending $3,000 within 3 months.

There doesn’t appear to be any restrictions in the terms and conditions, preventing you from getting the sign-up bonus, for having the same card in the past 12 months as there are with other American Express cards. But read the terms and conditions for your self.

However, you can’t get the 75,000 point offer if you currently have an American Express Hilton Surpass card.

You Aren’t Eligible for This Offer if you Already Have the American Express Surpass Card

You get free Hilton Gold elite status as long as you have the card.

Hilton Gold status means free internet & breakfast!  This saves you money – especially in Europe where breakfast and internet are expensive.  You could save $45 per day ($30 for breakfast for 2 and about $15 for internet) just by having Hilton gold status!

If you’re a Big Spender and spend $40,000 in a calendar year, you will get Hilton Diamond elite status which gives you free breakfast and internet and a better chance at upgrades.

You earn:

  • 12 Hilton points for every $1 spent at Hilton hotels
  • 6 points per $1 spent at restaurants, supermarkets & gas stations
  • And 3 points per $1 spent on everything else

The $75 annual fee is NOT waived for the 1st year and the card has a 2.7% foreign transaction fee.  So you shouldn’t use it outside the US.

Hilton Surpass vs. Hilton Reserve Cards

However, if I had to pick just ONE Hilton card, I’d pick the Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve Card.  That’s because I will get 2 free weekend nights valid at almost all Hilton hotels and because there are no foreign transaction fees on the Hilton Reserve card.

75,000 points sounds like a lot of points, but it isn’t enough for even 1 night at a top category Hilton hotel!

Here’s a post which compares the American Express Hilton Surpass card and the Citi Hilton Reserve card.

That said, you could apply for the Hilton Surpass card if you want to stock up on Hilton points.

Bottom Line

You can get 75,000 points from the American Express Hilton Surpass card unto February 28, 2014.

You get free Hilton Gold status with the American Express Hilton Surpass card which means free breakfast and internet!

I previously applied for the Hilton Surpass card for the 75,000 signup bonus. I then sold my 75,000 Hilton points to rewards2cash for $315.

The company has positive reviews on slickdeals, facebook, and fatwallet.

@ Robert — Thanks for the explanation!

@Lynn and Chris Dodd-Frank does not keep you from applying for a different card. It does keep you from “upgrading” from the regular to the Surpass. To apply for a Surpass while holding a regular HH card, make sure you log out from your American Express account. Then either clear all of your cookies and browsing history, or use “in private browsing” to apply. I currently have both cards open.

I second the question above from @Lynn. Sounds like @Lisa above (her 2nd comment) did two separate applications, but doesn’t mentioned if she cancelled the first card.

If I’m already holding the Amex Hilton honors card, can I use the application for the Surpass card for the 75k? Or do I need to cancel the Amex Hilton card and wait 3 months or is it a year before getting the surpass card? Thanks!
