American Express Green Card current offer

In addition to the bonus, the Amex Green card earns 3 Membership Rewards points per dollar on travel and worldwide restaurant purchases. All other spending earns 1 Membership Rewards point per dollar. This is a big improvement over the previous version of the card, which only earned 2 Amex points per dollar on travel booked through the Amex travel site and 1 point per dollar everywhere else.

The card also has added two statement credits. Each year you’ll get up to $100 in statement credits when you use your Amex Green card to pay for a CLEAR membership. CLEAR gets you expedited security at select airports and other venues. An annual membership usually costs $179, but if you’re a United MileagePlus member (it’s free to setup a United Airlines account) it only costs $119 per year, or even less if you have United Airlines status. Delta SkyMiles members can get similar discounts with CLEAR, so the Amex Green’s credit could help cover the rest of the cost. CLEAR is a great companion for TSA PreCheck or Global entry memberships — and there are lots of credits card with TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credits.

An interesting benefit is the up to $100 in LoungeBuddy statement credits per year. LoungeBuddy is different from Priority Pass in that it doesn’t sell a membership, but instead charges you per visit. Lounge visits start at $25 per person, but most fall in the $40-$50 range. For the occasional traveler, this could be all you need, but you’ll find that most of the best credit cards with airport lounge access come with a Priority Pass Select membership, which entitles the cardholder to unlimited free visits, and with many cards you’ll get to bring up to two free guests each time.

Along with these improvements the annual fee is increasing from $95 to $150 (see rates and fees).

If you can make use of one of the statement credits and you need a credit card for restaurants or a credit card for travel purchases, then this card could make sense for you. The welcome offer of 30,000 points and 3x points on travel and dining means you could easily rack up a whole bunch of points in the first year with the card. And the bonus categories make the card much more enticing to hold onto long term.

Membership Rewards points can be incredibly valuable, especially if you’re transferring them to one of Amex’s many airline partners to book awards in premium cabins. 50,000 Amex points transferred to Virgin Atlantic can get you a one-way flight from the US to Europe in Delta One Suites.

The Amex Green card is a charge card, which means it won’t count toward the (unofficial) five credit card limit that Amex imposes on most people.
