Earlier this year I booked two round-trip award flights to Hawaii by using 90,000 American Airlines miles and paid just ~$22 in taxes and fees.  It was my third time to Hawaii, and this time we went to Oahu!

By using the best travel rewards credit cards, I’ve been able to save thousands on flights and hotels.  One of my favorite ways of using travel rewards is to earn American Airlines miles with big sign-up offers.  For instance, can earn 70,000 American Airlines miles with the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® after making $4,000 in purchases within the first four months of account opening.

My mom just applied for this credit card and got approved, even with a pretty small business!

We Bought 2 Round-trip Tickets to Hawaii for 90,000 American Airlines Miles and Paid ~$22 TOTAL!

Planning a Hawaii vacation for yourself is easy with the help of travel rewards credit cards.  You can get at least one round-trip flight to Hawaii in economy class with the bonus earned with just one credit card, and still have a lot of miles left over!

Flying to Hawaii Using American Airlines Miles

It helps to be flexible with your dates when traveling to Hawaii, so you can purchase a Saver off-peak ticket and save your miles for future trips!   If you can’t find available award seats from your home airport, choose a different airport with available award seats on the West Coast.

Then, look for flights from your home city and your arrival city to piece together the award flights.  For my trip to Hawaii, we flew from Austin through San Diego on the departure trip, then through Los Angeles on the return trip.

Mile Saver off-peak award seats to Hawaii run for as low as 20,000 American Airlines miles one-way.  Keep in mind, off-peak seats are only for coach tickets, you will not be able to fly First or Business class.

Peak-season saver award seats in coach to Hawaii cost 22,500 American Airlines miles, or 45,000 miles round-trip!  This means you can get one round-trip flight to Hawaii on American Airlines with the points earned from only one travel rewards credit card bonus!

Bottom Line

American Airlines miles makes it easy to travel to Hawaii!  With the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® sign-up bonus, you’ll earn 70,000 American Airlines miles after making $4,000 in purchases within the first four months of account opening.

The CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® sign-up bonus is enough for one round-trip ticket to Hawaii, with plenty of miles left over.  Or you can book a one-way Business class Saver ticket to Hawaii for 40,000 American Airlines miles.

We used 80000 as miles from JFK to Lihue! We missed our initial departure on 26th Nov 2018 due to heavy rains in N.Y.. when we called aa support they did waive fees and booked us again from nov29th to Dec 4th. We saved among the two of us me and mom At least $1000 round trip to Lihue. Thanks for sharing those links from citi I deb 2018.. We enjoyed a second trip to hawaii!

Thanks for sharing your story! Hawaii is such a great place to visit!

And, you get 10% of your miles back if you have one of the AA credit cards also.

We are in Hawaii right now on our 4th trip here in the last 9 years. Third trip here using points and never planning to pay high fares again since the Midwest doesn’t get the sales that the west coast usually sees.

Thanks for commenting! I agree, once you get used to paying cheap fares with miles & points, you can never go back!
