American Airlines has announced changes to its frequent flyer program. None are too drastic or cause for alarm, but you should definitely be aware of them. You’ll even notice that your American Airlines miles are becoming a bit easier to use!
I’ll share what you need to know. And if you need help finding the best deals to book with your American Airlines miles, check out our Ultimate Guide on American Airlines miles!
American Airlines Changes
1. Fiji Airways and Malaysia Airlines Awards Can Now Be Booked Online
Earlier this week, American Airlines added Malaysia Airlines and Fiji Airways to their online booking system. This is good news because, with more award seats available online, it will be easier for you to use your American Airlines miles!
There’s a decent possibility this means more partner airlines will be added in the future. Especially given it was possible to book seats on other partner airlines, like Cathay Pacific and Qatar, for a short period of time a couple of months ago.
After the snafu, American Airlines said they were in the process of making more partner awards searchable on the American Airlines website. And hopefully, they’ll stick to their promise!
With partners being added online, it will be less of a hassle to book these tickets! But it could also mean award seats disappear more quickly.
2. If You Want Your Miles Back, You Must Cancel Award Tickets Prior to Departure
In the past, it’s been possible to cancel an award ticket after departure and still get your miles back. But as of November 1, 2018, this will no longer be the case. If you want your miles back, you’ll have to cancel your award ticket prior to your scheduled departure.
Honestly, I never considered canceling an award flight after departure, so I doubt this will be an issue for most.
3. New Prices on Award Tickets to Easter Island
As of November 1, 2018, flying to Easter Island from the US using American Airlines miles will require two awards – one from the US to either Tahiti or Santiago, Chile. And another award from one of those airports to Easter Island. Although, many award flights already will price out this away currently.
And American Airlines is changing the price on award tickets between Easter Island and both Tahiti and Santiago.
Effective November 1, 2018, a one-way coach flight from Santiago to Easter Island will only cost 17,500 American Airlines miles when it used to cost 45,000 miles. And the same flight in Business Class is going from 82,500 miles to 50,000 miles.
That said, a one-way coach ticket from Tahiti to Easter Island will cost a little more, from 15,000 miles to 17,500 miles. And Business Class flights on this route will remain the same.
This means if you’re headed to Easter Island and you can find an itinerary that routes through Santiago, your award flight will cost 27,500 miles less in coach or 32,500 fewer miles in Business. That’s excellent news!
