It’s great when an airline adds another partner, because it gives folks like us more options for redeeming our hard-earned miles & points.
So I’m happy to see Alaska Airlines adding Finnair as a partner airline. Because Finnair is based out of Helsinki, and from there, it’s easy to fly to other European cities, and even Asia!
With this new partnership, you can now credit any flights with Finnair to your Alaska Airlines account. But you can NOT yet redeem Alaska Airlines miles for flights on Finnair. Although they plan to make that possible this fall.
We also don’t yet know the details of using Alaska Airlines miles on Finnair, like how many miles you’ll need, but having more options is always nice! And we’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
Who Will Benefit From This Partnership?
Currently, you can fly Finnair to Helsinki from Chicago, New York (JFK), and Miami. And starting June 1, 2017, they’ll launch flights from San Francisco.
So if you live in or near any of these cities, fly Finnair, and normally credit your flights to Finnair’s oneworld partners like American Airlines, you can now credit the miles you earn to your Alaska Airlines account.
Later this year, you’ll also be able to use your Alaska Airlines miles for award flights on Finnair!
When you purchase a ticket on Finnair, you’ll earn miles based on the distance you fly. And depending on the class you book, you can credit the miles you earn to Alaska Airlines and earn even more miles!
You can check here to see how many Alaska Alaska Airlines miles you’ll earn when you fly Finnair.
Million Mile Secrets team member Scott has flown non-stop between New York (JFK) and Helsinki on Finnair multiple times. In his opinion, July is the best time to visit Helsinki because of the warmer weather and many hours of sunlight.
Million Mile Secrets team member Jasmin flew on Finnair between Toronto and Berlin, and enjoyed an overnight in Helsinki. Even if you’re on a shorter layover, there’s an inexpensive public bus that runs frequently between the airport and downtown if you want to explore for a couple of hours.
This new partnership is also good news for folks looking to visit Asia, because Finnair flies non-stop from Helsinki to popular spots like Bangkok, Thailand, too. So you’ll have more ways to use your Alaska Airlines miles to explore the world.
More Ways to Earn Alaska Airlines Miles
There are plenty of ways to earn Alaska Airlines miles. A quick way is to sign up for:
- Bank of America Alaska Airlines cards (personal and small business) – Earn 30,000 Alaska Airlines miles after making $1,000 in purchases within the first 90 days of opening your account
And because of the Alaska Airlines Virgin America merger, you can transfer Virgin America points to Alaska Airlines at a ratio of 1:1.3. But unfortunately, the Comenity Bank Virgin America cards are no longer available.
Bottom Line
Alaska Airlines and Finnair are now partners! For now, you can earn Alaska Airlines miles for flights on Finnair. And this fall, you’ll be able to redeem your Alaska Airlines miles for Finnair flights. The number of Alaska Airlines miles you’ll earn for purchased Finnair tickets depends on the class you’re flying. And although we don’t know how many Alaska Airlines miles you’ll need for Finnair flights, once that option is available, we’ll let you know!
