Vitaly and Shweta commented that an extra 40,000 American Express Membership Reward points appeared in their accounts today.
What a nice way to start the day!
I did some digging (40,000 extra points sure gets my attention!), and I came across a Fat Wallet thread where folks are speculating that the extra 40,000 Membership Reward points could be from a previous promotion targeted to Columbia MBA graduates (for 50K points) which wasn’t cancelled when folks switched promotion codes to a more lucrative offer (75K points).
Anyone who switched promo codes from the 50k/2 years waived membership fee to the 75k promo code by having AMEX correct their Gold Premier Rewards card application from a few months back seem to have had another 40k points automatically deposited this morning in their accounts. Seems as thought they initially deposited 10k of the 50k promised in the promo, and honored the extra 40k this morning.
There’s a similar thread on Slickdeals where folks are writing that they have received the 40,000 points in addition to the bonus points promised when they switched promo codes.
But don’t get too excited since American Express could take these points back, just as easily as they gave them out! Something similar happened when Priority Club posted points to member’s accounts in error and later took the points back. I don’t think there is anything wrong in taking back points that were posted in error to your account, just as there is nothing wrong with your bank taking back money that was mistakenly put in your account.
I don’t have the AMEX gold Premier Reward card since I didn’t want to take the risk of not having a promo code applied to my account, so I don’t have any personal experience with this.
Online Travel Review posted great tips on how to increase your chances of getting a bonus applied from AMEX and Mommy Points has posted her experience on chasing down missing AMEX points.
Mommy points is also giving away a free night to the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines. And the one thing better than Big Travel with Small Money is Big Travel with NO Money so enter her contest for a chance to win!
I have a very busy travel schedule this week and won’t be able to research the 40,000 mystery points, but please share any information you may have in the comments.
And do NOT call AMEX about this!
Have you got a 40,000 point present from AMEX?
(Hat Tip to Vitaly and Shweta for the heads up!)
