It’s now possible to redeem American Airlines miles online for award flights on 3 additional partner airlines – Qatar Airways, SriLankan Airlines, and Air Tahiti Nui! Last month, American Airlines added Malaysia Airlines and Fiji Airways and I’m guessing more partners, like Cathay Pacific, will be added soon.
This will make searching for and booking awards with these partners much easier. Previously, you had to call to book the awards. Hopefully this doesn’t mean that award flights with these airlines get scooped up more quickly. But it’s likely that it will be a bit harder to find award seats with these partners because folks that don’t know all tricks to using American Airlines miles will now be able to stumble across these awards with little hassle.
One of the great things about American Airlines miles is how easy they are to earn. Both Barclays and Citi issue American Airlines credit cards, so you’ve got lots of options for amassing a stash of miles.
Personally, I’ve got my eye on a Qatar Airways QSuites award (Business Class), which is widely regarded as the best Business Class seat in the world! And I was able to find tons of available seats from Doha to my home airport in Chicago (and vice versa)! I found entire months with 2 or more open award seats, although not all of them were direct flights.
These flights typically cost $4,500+ one-way, or you can redeem 70,000 American Airlines (plus taxes + fees). I was able to earn enough miles to book a one-way award with just a single sign-up bonus from the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®. With the card you can earn a 70,000 American Airlines mile bonus after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first 4 months of account opening!
Or if you’re new to miles & points (or just need a few more American Airlines miles) you could apply for the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card, which is a personal card with no annual fee. With it you can earn 10,000 American Airlines miles after spending $500 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. It has a relatively small sign-up bonus, but it’s still a great option with a much smaller spending requirement. And you’re eligible to get this card, even if you have other Citi American Airlines cards.
