Via One Mile at a Time, you can convert hotel points from 9 hotel programs to American Airlines and receive a 25% bonus through June 15, 2017.

I usually do NOT recommend transferring hotel points to airlines, because you’ll get much less value per point.  But there are some situations where it makes sense!

Normally, it is NOT a good idea to transfer hotel points to airlines.  That’s because the transfer ratio is almost always terrible.  So you’ll get more value redeeming your points for hotel stays.

The only exceptions to this rule are:

But now, American Airlines is giving folks a 25% bonus when they transfer hotel points from 9 hotel programs:

  • Best Western – 5,000 Best Western points = 1,250 American Airlines miles after 25% bonus
  • Club Carlson – 2,000 Club Carlson points = 250 American Airlines miles after 25% bonus
  • Choice – 5,000 Choice points = 1,250 American Airlines miles after 25% bonus
  • Hilton – 10,000 Hilton points  = 1,875 American Airlines miles after 25% bonus
  • Hyatt – 5,000 Hyatt points = 2,500 American Airlines miles after 25% bonus
  • IHG – 10,000 IHG points = 2,500 American Airlines miles after 25% bonus
  • Marriott – 70,000 Marriott points = 31,250 American Airlines miles after 25% bonus (ratio decreases if you transfer less points)
  • Starwood – 1 Starwood points = 1.25 American Airlines miles after 25% bonus (or an effective ~1.56 American Airlines miles per Starwood point if you transfer in increments of 20,000)
  • Wyndham – 6,000 Wyndham points = 1,200 American Airlines miles after 25% bonus

Who Should Convert Hotel Points?

As One Mile at a Time points out, the best deals are still with Starwood and Marriott.

When you transfer Starwood points to American Airlines miles, you’ll always get a 25% bonus when you transfer in increments of 20,000.  But this additional promotion will give you a 25% bonus on top of the regular 25% bonus you’ll get!

So when you transfer 20,000 Starwood points to American Airlines, you’ll end up with 31,250 American Airlines miles (20,000 Starwood points = 20,000 American Airlines miles + 5,000 bonus miles from Starwood + 6,250 bonus miles from American Airlines).

This promotion is valuable for Marriott points because Marriott points convert to Starwood at a 3:1 ratio.  If you do NOT transfer your Marriott points to Starwood, you will get at best a ratio of 1 American Airlines mile for every 2.4 Marriott points (70,000 Marriott points = 25,000 American Airlines miles + 6,250 bonus miles = 31,250 American Airlines miles).

But if you transfer that same amount of points to Starwood and then to American Airlines, you’ll get a ratio of 1 American Airlines mile for every 1.98 Marriott points (70,000 Marriott points = 23,333 Starwood points = 23,333 American Airlines miles + 5,000 bonus miles from Starwood + 7,083 bonus miles from American Airlines = 35,416 American Airlines miles).

Hotel Points Are Most Valuable When You Use Them for Hotel Stays. But Transfer Bonuses Can Occasionally Tilt the Scales!

However, it could be worth transferring other hotel points to American Airlines, depending on your situation.  If you have hotel points in a program you don’t think you’ll use, it’s worth transferring them to an airline you think you will use.  Getting little value from your points is better than getting NO value.

Or, if you are just a few thousand points short of an award flight, it could be worth transferring hotel points to American Airlines, so you can book your ticket!

Bottom Line

Through June 15, 2017, American Airlines is adding a 25% transfer bonus when you convert hotel points into American Airlines miles.

I do NOT normally recommend transferring hotel points into airline miles, because the transfer ratio is so poor.  But some folks, especially with Starwood or Marriott points, might like this deal!

I currently have 185k Marriott points, but I need 140k of those points for a 5-night stay at a category 7 property. I have a few options to take advantage of this transfer bonus:

1. Transfer the remaining 45k Marriott points > 15k SPG points > 18,750 AA miles.

2. Transfer 15k Ultimate Rewards points to Marriott. Then transfer 60k Marriott > 20k SPG > 31,250 AA miles.

3. Transfer 15k Ultimate Rewards points to Marriott. Then try to get a 5-night category 7 hotel package for 200k Marriott points (it’s not an even exchange…they charge an extra 10k points for the airline miles with the 5-night package) which would cover the 140k points for my hotel stay and 50k AA miles * 1.25 = 62,500 AA miles.

Option 1 is not worth it because I could just wait until I earn 5k more SPG points later this year and transfer those 20k points into 25k miles on almost any airline without the need for a special promotion.

I don’t really want to transfer 15k UR points for option 2 and get only half the miles I could get with option 3.

Option 3 is my preference, but there is no guarantee that they’ll let me get the 5-night package. If I call now and get a rep who is willing to give me the package, I’ll still have to transfer the points and wait until they post (which takes a few days) and then call back to book the package, and I might get a different rep who won’t give me the package. Then I’ll have “wasted” my UR points on that transfer. I suppose I could still go with option 2 in that scenario, but I’d be so angry at only getting half the miles for the same number of points.

Otherwise, I could forgo this promotion altogether and just pay for my flights

What should I do? Thanks!
